Going alone to Puerto Rico for Spanish and mental health

Hi all!
I am looking to travel to either Oaxaca Mexico or PR for about four days to force spanish into my head. I have several languages that blend due to other trips. Please tell me about the safety for a female alone, best off the beaten path for food and fun yet economical. I don't need a fancy place but I do like to eat and need to speak spanish. Looking at PR as Mexico is iffy regarding safety I keep being told. Thanks!

Well certainly not all of Mexico is iffy for solo female safety. Just that you've pick one of the cities that HAS had political unrest over recent years.

You can go plenty of other places in Mexico besides Oaxaca for a four day retreat.

Thank you, actually I do not hear negative from people in that area, it is the mexicans in our country that say "no go". I have been to cozemel and all the cruise stops, but I long for a less touristic venture.

I would suggest you go to PR. Right, now Mexico is kinda of dangerous especially for a single female. In Puerto Rico you can speak Spanish and if you mess up they can correct you and tell you where you went wrong in English. It's also much safer for a single female traveler. If you decide to stay in San Juan, I recommend the Gallery Inn. The owner name is Jan. She is a personal friend and a wonderful hostess. The inn is a bed n breakfast .....you know what it's better if you just check out the website for yourself. www.thegalleryinn.com. I believe they are listed here in Fodor's or at least they were. They will take good care of you. Last time I talked with her the had some specials. Anyway, I hope this helps you out

I do not agree all of the country of Mexico is currently dangerous for a single female traveler. That's ridiculous.

I do think I might consider somewhere like San Miguel de Allende or one of the colonial cities outside the DF, instead of Oaxaca though.
