Stopped in Dominica 2 years ago and was not impressed w/the downtown area. Carnival Destiny will be there again in April. I have read some positive reviews on the boards and think I should give the island a second chance. Looking for suggestions on excursions or a nice hotel w/ beach that will show the island at it's best.
Give Dominica a second chance?

Dominica is not a "beach" destination.
If you were/are expecting that, you will be disappointed as you were before.
I don't think there are any beaches there at all to speak of. Maybe one or two small ones with black sand. (It is a volcanic island.)
Dominica is all about lush, hilly beauty; the cultural history of the few remaining Caribs; and the friendliness of its people.
The attraction is more for people who want to hike in some of the few remaining virgin forests in the Caribbean or immerse themselves in viewing unusual and rare flora and fauna in verdant surroundings.
Dominica is one of the poorest islands in the Caribbean, and their capital (Roseau) is not known for being "picturesque".
Might be a good idea to do more research...
My husband and I visited Dominica last winter, and LOVED it, and we plan to return someday. We love hiking, waterfalls, hot springs, and kayaking. This place was gorgeous and relaxing. Try Ken's Hinterland Adventures for some great excursions to see this wonderful island.
