For singles - other than Club Med?
Anyone know of any resorts like Club Med? I'm looking for something a bit classier, a bit calmer, but somewhere you can travel alone and not stand out...

I always travel alone and am comfortable doing so. I'd not enjoy a Club Med for one nanosecond. I always make friends on my travels. When people find out you are traveling alone they seem to invite you to join them for drinks or dinner.
Maybe you could give a better description of the type of vacation you'd like.
I've been to Dominica in the Caribbean alone and really enjoyed it. I spent a lot of time resting alternated with some wonderful rainforest hikes. I'm going to St. Lucia alone in February.

Le Sport in St. Lucia is great for singles.
They do single rooms so there is no single supplement to worry about.
The Oasis spa helps you make friends easily because you get chatting to people at all the classes like yoga, tai chi etc. Its a really friendly resort for one of the smaller hotels/islands (eg not jamaica, bahamas etc)

Minooka, I guess I'm looking for more of an all-inclusive type thing, than not. Does anything exist in the caribbean like Club Med, but not so...tacky? The hotels that I've looked at all seem unbelievably beautiful and even more unbelievably expensive. I'm looking to lie on the beach, maybe do some water skiing and not be the only single diner in the restaurant...ideas?

The reason I asked is because, I used to go AI all the time and thought it was really the only way to go. But then I started venturing out a little and realized that it's so nice to take a trip where you can soak up more of the local culture, meet very interesting people and taste the cusine of the country without getting bored of the same old bufett day after day. Now I like to go to small places that are friendly and personalized, and I really wouldn't do AI again unless I was going with a group that mostly wanted that or maybe when I have kids for the childrens activities.
What is your budget? I'd be happy to throw out some rec's.

PS I am very interested in excellent food and some pampering. Food is not the main concern but I love to treat myself when I can in every way. White beach, not wild nightlife but maybe some nice live music and some local shopping. I love meeting locals, too and that is a great suggestion! I look forward to your response.

One place that immediatly comes to mind is Victoria House, which is on Ambergis Caye in Belize.

They are running a 6th night free special now too, so it may fit nicely in your budget. Food is great and the resort is small so it would probably be easy to meet people.
Check it out and let me know what you think and I can come up with some more places if you can get more specific about what you are looking for.

Something upscale, classy with a very nice pool and oceanfront white beach> I want to spend quiet time alone but if others are having fun (being a bit loud) around me that is great. I love to see people having a great time but enjoy spectating more than participating except for joining in intersting conversations occasionally. I am an outgoing person but want his time for ME< ME< ME! It is easy for me to met people (when I choose to) so that shouldn't be a problem anywhere I choose. Yes, the 2000 should include airfare.
Thanks again!!

I think the stigma may exist with the "singles" Club Med - which are known for a young, party, "meat market" atmosphere. But, when I was at the Club Med in Ixtapa Mexico, one of the family ones - there were a number of single travelers. They were able to meet a lot of people because meals are served family style and they seat you with other people. There was nothing cheesy about the place.

I would say I am very picky and I really liked the Turks & Caicos Club Med I went to. Some of the people were wild and doing wild things...I was not one of them. I enjoyed doing my own thing - playing tennis every day, learning to sail, water skiing and eating what I still think is the best all-inclusive food I've ever had. I met some very nice people and liked it so much I went to Martinique several years after that. I am now married with a little girl and considering going again. It is not the Ritz-Carlton but a very good bargain for the money you will spend.
If you are dead-set against club med you might want to check out the Iberostar resorts or the Occidental Resorts in the Caribbean. Check out reviews on tripadvisor.com (not sure about the other urls).

I want the same thing for my vacation and I have roughly the same budget. In fact, I could have written your post our needs are that identical The only thing I didn't care about was AI. With the advice I got here I decided to go to Negril Jamaica and spend half the time in the Caves and half on the Beach. I chose Idle Awhle which has a special stay 4 days and night 5 is free. Staying at Idle provides free access to the Couples Swept Away resort facilities so I'll be able to get spa treatments, take a yoga class, etc. I also chose to stay in Tensing Pen which has pretty good rates since we are past high season. The whole thing incuding tax = $1700 which leaves $300 for food, tours, etc. (My budget is $2,300 so I have $600 for fun). I know this is not a lot of spending money but I'm staying for 9 days. You could save a few hundred by staying for 6 or 7 and then have plenty of money left over for the rest. (BTW, there is a continential breakfast with one of the hotels which will help). It seems like there are lots of places to go to dance, drink, and watch local activities, but they are also far enough away that I get the tranquil time I need for myself. I plan to write a trip report when I get back but I hope that helps.

I've been to three "adults-only" Club Meds while in my early 30's. While I've traveled around the world, I feel like my CM vacations - which I took with my girlfriends - may have been the best of all my trips! It's non-stop activities & tons of friendly people...I never even had to leave the resort. However, since I'd rather not go back to the same resort twice, I'm also looking for alternative singles resorts that have just as many on-site activities & sports. Anyone have any suggestions?
