We will be making a return trip to Eleuthera in June. It ihas been about 6 years since we were there last. Trying to fly through Nassau but connection times are slim. How much time might we need? Considering flying to the island on Southern Air. Suggestions on airlines? We are flying from Kansas City and there is just no easy, direct way to get there! Fly through Ft. Lauderdale? Houston? How much time, leaving, might be needed to clear Customs?
Thanks!

aa.com directs MIA ELH usually best for me
spirit.com to Nassau from FLL than out locally
probably will be even cheaper but more of a hassle.
No experience with southern.
kayak.com/buzz cheapoair.com good screening sites
Eleuthera is quite long there are 3 major airports
ELH Marsh Harbor and Governers Harbor so try to get
as close as you can to where ever you will be staying
or gound xport cost will be very high.
Used to fly my plane out from Ft. Pierce and West Palm
(PBI) with 4 small plane charter out might make sense
it is not far. 40 miles to west end Grand Bahahama I then
Hang a right down the Abacos to ELH and you are there.
Good luck!
For connection time in Nassau I allow no less than an hour if I am carry-on only, an additional 30 min if I have to collect bags. Nassau airport is more efficient than it was years ago so you may do fine with less. I like to have a little cushion personally.
Airlines to look at from Nassau would be Pineapple Air, Southern Air, Bahamas Air and not sure if Flamingo Air flies to Eleuthera or not. I just checked Pineapple for our trip and fares are only $65 each way with 3 times daily to N. Eleuthera airport (ELH) from Nassau.
We prefer to fly through Ft Lauderdale as it is smaller and less chaotic than Miami. These two airports offer non-stop service to Eleuthera, too, on Continental (FLL) and AA (MIA). Normally we cannot make it to the island same day so if we have to overnight somewhere we prefer Ft Lauderdale over Miami or Nassau for convenience.
I just checked SWA and it can get you to FLL in time to catch the Cont'l/United flight at 12:30 having you on Eleuthera at 1:35 same day.
Hope that helps.
There are some helpful links on the Eleuthera Map website travel page which shows which airlines are currently coming in and out of each of the Eleuthera airports.
