First trip to Vieques

I'm planning a 7 day trip to Vieques for 2 middle-aged adults and I need guidance please! Is one side of the island more desirable than another? Is the vibe/scenery different enough to warrant moving around the island to take it all in? Any suggestions on places to stay? We are low maintenance and do not require luxury. We are all about the view and prefer to be oceanfront, away from noise/crowds. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated!!!

None of the hotels on Vieques is on the best beaches. You'll need to drive to reach those (so a jeep or car rental is a necessity there). The new W hotel is the only large resort property that I know of, and it may be open when you travel to Vieques (it's currently scheduled after myriad delays of years to open in late March). If you don't care about luxury amenities and want to get away from the crowds, avoid that. Choose one of the smaller hotels. The advantage of the north shore is proximity to Isabel Segunda; the advantage of the south shore is proximity to Bahia Mosquito (the bio bay). However, the south shore might have an edge; it's where hotels like in the Inn on the Blue Horizon are (which is not on the beach), and they are close to nice beaches like Playa Esperanza and Playa Media Luna.

If you really want to get away, perhaps choose a villa rental; there are several of those available, mostly inland.

Thanks! Would you split up the trip? 3 nights "up north" and 3 nights "down south"?

Don't split the trip. Vieques is small and you will be driving to the beaches anyway so don't add the extra hassle of checking in and checking out.

We've stayed in Esperanza in the south twice. Last time we rented a house through VRBO (a 10 minute walk from the Malecon) and previously we've stayed at Hectors by the Sea which was very quiet and peaceful.
Note. if you do rent a villa in town you might well be woken by chickens!

I agree that you will be driving to most of the nice beaches. I have an extensive trip report to Vieques on my blog with photos it you are interested. We stayed at the Palm Cottage and absolutely loved it. It was reasonable, safe and wonderful service by the owners.

I agree that you don't want to move around but stay in one spot. We stayed in a villa on a hill with great views and a swimming pool that was wonderful to come back to after a day at the beach. The rentals that say they are a beach front are located on a rocky beach that isn't quite the sandy front you imagine.

Rent a jeep, explore and don't stick to one spot. There are many gorgeous beaches to see on this island along with friendly locals and wild horses.

I'll never forget our introduction to the wild horses; after we landed we got in our rental car and no sooner had pulled onto the road when a small herd of horses came flying past us at breakneck speed in the oncoming lane. Magical! Later in the week we observed some horses standing in the water and sand at the beach. One of my favorite parts of Vieques were the horses.

Mine, too, Maggi.

The roosters -- not so much!

We've had that problem in other places, but not where we stayed on Vieques. Maybe because it was a little fenced compound. Hate being woken at 4am by roosters!

Thanks so much to you all for the recommendations! We can't wait to exchange some of this snow for sand!
