I am planning my first trip to Puerto Rico in May. I would like to stay in one hotel the entire trip (5 nights) and do day trips. I will have a rental car. I am interested in lazy afternoons at the beach, as well as, hiking/adventure tours, and historical sites. I want to fit the best of the country into 5 days. I am open to all ideas and suggestions from hotels, local dives to eat, and places I can't leave without seeing. Thanks!

Based on your criteria, I would suggest you use the San Juan area as your base. The two main resort areas in San Juan are Condado and Isla Verde. Condado is closer to Old San Juan. Isla Verde is closer to the airport. There are a number of hotels in both those areas from which to choose. Old San Juan will satisfy your desire for historical sites. El Yunque Rainforest will satisfy your desire for hiking. I don't know what types of adventure tours are available. Both Condado and Isla Verde beaches will have jet skis and parasailing available. The surf at Condado beach is rougher than the surf at Isla Verde.
Just returned from a 7 day S. Caribbean cruise and 4 nights in Puerto Rico. We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott in Isla Verde. This was our third time staying at this property. I really like the beach here. The hotel has good restaurants a casino and Salsa nights. It also has a concierge desk that will book tours departing right from the hotel. The staff at this property are all very nice and one of the reasons I will return. It is also close to Old San Juan which will fill your historical desire. The forts are awesome!
Thanks!
