Favorite Conch Places, Nassau & Freeport

Hey Fodorites! We're cruising the Bahamas next week, hoping you will tell us your favorite stops for delicious conch - cracked, salad, anyway we can get it will be wonderful! The more out-of-the-way the better (we will probably rent a vehicle to explore). Thanks!

Don't know if these places are all still there, (been about 5 years ago) but we had so much conch on one trip to the Bahamas, I did not think I would ever eat it again...

Cracked, stewed, fritters, curried - you name it. (It will always be one of my favorites!)

Port Lucaya Marketplace. Fatman's Nephew upstairs - kinda touristy but still good. (Also has killer rice and peas.)

Georgie's - Port Lucaya Marketplace. This place was great. I got the curried conch and got it so all over me the stains never came out of my white blouse.

Bishop's, Becky's and Geneva's are all out and about and all serve mouth-watering conch in various manners.

(If you get tired of seafood and need a steak, Luciano's in Port Lucaya has the most scrumptious filet mignon topped with roquefort cheese and an amazing sauce...)

Oooh, it's only 8:50 am and I am HUNGRY!

Have a great time!

Hi Joan,
In Freeport, walking just a few yards on the beach from Island Seas Resort(a timeshare condo resort), is Zonk the Conch Man--awesome! It is a grill on the beach with picnic tables. He prepares it fresh(something like 7 ways), try the killer drink while you wait! We were there last July, this is assuming he is still there. A search on this site might bring up some more info. Have a blast, Carol

Thank you ladies! Diana, I'm still chuckling at the image of you covered with curry...hmm could this be related to Kalik consumption?
Carol, Zonk sounds like our kind of guy!

This may seem odd, but the conch fritters at the snack bar at UNEXCO dive center, adjacent to Port Lucaya Market Place, are excellent and some of the best I had on GBI. Bishops Lodge toward east end has wonderful cracked conch (will need a car to get there though). It is worth the drive if you do have car. It is out by Gold Rock Beach and is basically a fishing lodge with a good dining room. Ask anyone they will know where Bishops is located.

Underneath the Paradise Island Bridge, in Potter's Cay, is a stand where they make conch salad right in front of you. Order the Dominoes Pizza "Conch Pizza" for a REAL change in typical Amcerican pizza. "Conch Fritters" restaurant, moderately priced to inexpensive pricings, has good conch items; it's directly across Bay Street from the British Colonial Hotel. Take a jitney to Arawak Cay, or about a 15 minute walk from downtown Nassau, to enjoy their fish fry, conch whatever. There are stalls and restaurants there selling fresh Bahamian foods. For DEEP Bahamain foods, visit the Bahamian Kitchen by Trinity Place off Bay Street. Have fun! Robert

Also the Junkanoo CAfe downtown has great conch burgers and fritters. And a fun place for dinner is Johnny Canoe's on Cable Beach. Some nights there is even a Junkanoo.

Have a great time.

Can anyone tell me how expensive food is on Grand Bahamas? I'm not real interested in paying lots of money and even plan on bringing some food with me. Just trying to figure how much money to budget for meals out.

Thanks!
