Families at Maho Bay-St. John

We are thinking of taking our 8 and 10-year olds to Maho Bay. Good idea?

I don't think that your children will like Maho Bay if they are as restless as mine. After all, there is little to do there beyond sea, sun and beach. Do they enjoy reading? I think my children, ages 12 and 15, would starve if confronted with the food that was served there several years ago. I would stay in Cruz Bay where there is ( or used to be ) a Wendy's.

Any of the campgrounds on St. John are a great family vacation idea. They're very affordable with an abundance of nature at your doorstep to explore. Your children's ages are ideal for this environment, particularly if they like to explore wooded areas and unfamiliar reptiles. We stayed at Cinnamon Bay some time ago and had the pleasure of viewing wild donkeys. It was a lot of fun. The whole island is great to explore; don't limit yourself to Maho if you do decide to stay there.

I've been to Cinnamon Campground 15 times with my 4 kids. Maho is 150 steps of a wooden structure down to the beach and with kids someone is always forgetting something, so Cinnamon works well with us at sea level. My kids love the beach, snorkeling, hiking trails ad just hanging out. We do bring a good amount of food. Wendy's has been long gone but, there are reasonable restaurants with kids menus.and a great pizza place across from the school thats in walking distance from down. You need a taxi to get around. Any other questions you can mail me at the above address.

Unless you children amuse themselves well on there own I'm not sure how well they would do at Maho for a long stretch. Although great for a family looking for that"Back to nature" trip. The beach there is ok. - nothing memorable..

Thank you for your response to my question. I went on a bareboat charter to the virgin islands several years ago and have dreamed of going back. Have also wanted to introduce my family to the carribean and I think St. John is the place to go. I'll look into Cinnamon Bay - don't know much about it. Did you day trip to any of the other islands - Tortola or Virgin Gorda? Were you able to keep busy on St. John?

We camped at Maho once and at Cinammn Bay about 6 times when my girls were between the ages of 1 and 10. We have also rented condos aznd houses but whereever we were they had a great time and so did we. You can find a wendy's anywhere( no more on St. John) but you could neve find the beauty and fun of St. John anywhere else. It is true that the beach at Maho is not much but you can get to francis Bay and Little Maho by walking if you are in basic good health. Cinammon Bay has a beautiful Beach, in fact spectacular and like one of the previous respondents we did like it better than Maho. Both places have lots of water sports equipment to rent and my kids always met other kids at these campgrounds. Both places are very friendly. If there is nothing on the menu that they like you can throw something together from the little stores at both campgrounds. We all loved the trip to the Baths at Virgin Gorda( went twice). You can go by private boat or take the public taxi from Cruz Bay one or two days a week. A jeep rental for at least a day would be a good way to see other beaches and other parts of the island. We met many people on our visits to St John who had been to many other islands and all said that St. John was the most beautiful.

Hello again- I forgot to tell you that we spen a week in Tortola one year when we thought we should try another island. It was beautiful and fun but just not St. John. I don't recommend a day trip there with the kids because there really isn/t anything there that can't be found on St. John.
If you have any more specific questions just let me know-I live to talk about St. John.
