Fajardo vs. Vieques for bioluminescent bay tour

Is it worth it to take the ferry over to Vieques to do a bioluminescent bay tour or can we get an almost equal tour in Fajardo? Since the ferry has been spotty, I'm not sure if we want to chance not making it to the island, and we don't want to fly there. If the Fajardo tour is good too, I'd rather stay on the mainland. Thanks for any help!

I can't compare the two but I've taken the tour in Vieques with Island Adventures twice and it was amazing both times.

I made my choice based on research that the Vieques bioluminescent tour is a better experience with healthier, more numerous dinoflagelates and less light pollution.
I believe that the Vieques Bay is the only place in Puerto Rico that you get to swim in the water and experience the sensation of diamonds dripping through your fingers or making a bioluminescent 'angel' in the water.

There are few areas where these bioluminescent creatures still exist and Mosquito Bay, Vieques is said to have the highest concentration in the world.

It's your decision to make whether the inconvenience to get to Vieques is worth it or not.

Bear in mind that if you don't want to overnight on Vieques then you don't have to take the regular 'spotty' ferry to the island you can take a bio tour from the mainland to Vieques with East Wind Catamaran.

Make sure you check the moon calendar before you make a choice on when and where to go!

Thanks, Sassy Cat! Did you take the ferry over both times? Did you ever have any problems with it?

We took the ferry both times to and from Viques and our trips were during the winter ( @ Thanksgiving and over New year).
No problems with the ferry but it's best to get there early (at least 30 mins in advance and more if it's busy, on a weekend or holiday).
It's so much cheaper than flying especially with a family of 4 and I'm happier on a boat than a tiny plane.

Both times we stayed on Vieques for several nights as we wanted to snorkel/ explore the beaches not just experience the biobay. Fantastic beaches!

There is an active forum on Tripadvisor for Vieques which you might find helpful.
