I finally settled on Fajardo as a destination for a family vacation in early January (why January? My two kids are in college and it is the only time we can coordinate their schedules.) Why Fajardo? The bio bay, close to some good beaches, the close proximity to San Juan airport ( we only have a week and I want to make getting where we will stay as simple as possible.), the condos advertised on VRBO are within my budget, and it looks active enough to engage two young adults. Then I read on Fodors that Fajardo has an "unremarkable downtown" and is heavily congested with traffic. Should I see this as a red flag? Please advise. Would you suggest another destination?

We stayed at the nearby Wyndham Rio Del Mar, and only went through Fajardo once, but it wouldn't be my first choice for a vacation. Yes, it's close to Bio Bay, and ferry departures for Vieques- all good- but it is a busy city with traffic, day trippers, etc.
Have you thought about Riveria Maya at all or is Mexico off your list? So much more to do there, and lots of nice places to stay in every price range. My kids loved it.
Not an ideal location. It's a busy town and can be a bit seedy around the ferry area. It's somewhere to pass through rather than a final vacation destination.
Best options in PR imo would be Condado, Isla Verde, Rincon or one of the islands, Vieques or Culebra.
Agree, not an ideal location. But the island just a short ferry ride from Fajardo is spectacular. It's called Culebra. Very quiet little island, gorgeous beaches. Stay there with your family!
