The latest post on this board about ESJ was in 1998 - can anyone tell me if that area of PR is as seedy as those posts mentioned? How much is a bus ride/ tour to the rainforest? What clothing is appropriate? I have heard that people dress very nicely there. Any new info on the ESJ Towers?

The ESJ Towers is right next to what many people consider the place to go in San Juan - the El San Juan Hotel. They share the same beach. The section is called Isla Verde and is a major tourist area. I would not classify it as seedy. It is always very warm to hot in PR so casual summer clothes is the order of the day. I don't remember the last time I saw someone wearing a suit, shirt and tie in PR.
I agree with rqf - that area is definitely not seedy. You can take a tour to the rainforest or you can rent a car and drive there on your own (take a map). It is about 45 minutes from ESJ. Definitely go to the El San Juan hotel for nightlife. Great clubs and great bar. For food, you are close to many great restaurnts including Marisqueria La Atlantica, which has great seeafood. Regarding clothing - comfortable, light clothing (shorts, cotton shirts, etc.) are a must in the day-time, it will be hot! In the evening, if you are going clubbing or going to a bar at the El San Juan next door, don't wear shorts or t-shirts.
Spent week there in
March. Area not seedy at all! If you are referring to ESJ towers apts/timeshares next door to Wyndam El San Juan, some of them show a little wear inside and there is the airport noise, but the resort itself is in tiptop condition. Fine beach, great restaurants of all prices in area, easy to get to rest of island.
