Eleuthera

Just returned from Harbour Island.
One day we rented a car and explored Eleuthera. We used The Elusive Beaches of Eleuthera book as our guide (2007 edition)
If anyone would like this book just let me know and I will pass it on!

MargeM, how very generous of you!

Where did you stay? Did you have a good time? Feel like doing a trip report?

foodiechan,
The book was useful. We would have never found some of the beaches if we did not have the book!(You will see what I mean when you follow some of the directions! ex. turn right even though the left looks like a better road:] )
The beaches were absolutley beautiful.

MargeM,
who did you rent a car from?
In 1 day, how many of the beaches did you see?

Can you give a trip report?

Would love to hear if you did any snorkeling. Eleuthera is one of the islands I've long been itnerested in visiting-- but have stayed away because my sense of it has been that it's not especially good in that respect. I.e. I imagine there are a number of reefs-- at least plenty of fish, etc-- in various spots if one takes a boat out; I'm wondering if there's much good snorkeling right from the shore.

Blamona,
We rented the car from Frederick at Fine Threads. He met us at the dock and took us to our car at the North Eleuthera airport. At the end of the day, we dropped the car off at the dock with a full tank of gas and then caught the water taxi back to Harbour Island. Total "Honor System", we did not have to give him a deposit or any id. I think we paid $70 for the day.

Marge, what beaches did you see on Eleuthera? Any you recommend or to avoid?

Thanks!

Beachgirl, my favorite beaches on eleuthera are the beach by Joe's restaurant, Ten Bay (during low tide...the water is shallow for 100s of yards, just gorgeous), and Club Med beach in that order. Others not to miss are tippys beach, double bay and Cocodimama beach on the caribbean side if you are interested in shelling.

What do you think about Eleuthera for a family vacation (kids 5 & 7)? It looks beautiful and since we are land locked in Ohio, the kids pretty much just want a beach to play on. I can see it isn't very developed - just a handful of restaurants, no?

I'd pick Harbour Island over Eleuthera for your first trip over. The beach is spectacular, and there will be other kids for yours to play with.

Eleuthera is very pretty, and BIG, 110 miles long, so you need to have a car to get anywhere and they are expensive there. If the kids just want beach, go to Harbour Island, lots of restaurants within walking distance, or you can rent a golf cart to tool around in, a bit of shopping, 2 ice cream shops, pizza shop, conch fritters everywhere and beautiful beach and ocean views.
