Hi, folks. Well, I'm back from my 17 days in Grenada, though I did check in here periodically to get my fix after I moved to a villa with wifi access.
I'll do my Grenada trip report soon, but because of the nature of the trip I want to put a little more thought into this one and not crank it out right away.
But what I really wanted to mention here, and perhaps just soak up a little sympathy by doing it, is that I left my digital camera and all camera accoutrements on the airplane when I got home late Wednesday night. The camera itself is quite replaceable but I fear that the more than 500 photos on the two memory cards are not. I feel like I've been punched in the gut over the loss. And while I'm not happy to lose pictures of the beaches, sunsets, and the villa, the real losses are all of those pictures from my first week down there that can never be recreated.
Anyway, I'm in temporary mourning. And I'm shamelessly asking here for your sympathy and seeking your comments to make me feel better. My husband is certainly sympathetic, but there's something about all of you, my virtual travel buddies, that I crave right now.
thank you,
emily
ejcrowe would like to request a moment of mourning...

Oh Emily I am so very sorry. That is one of my worst fears. I can imagine how you feel.
Maybe there is a chance it will be returned to you? I'm sure you have called the airline.
I would be devastated as well but now you have an excuse to go back to try to re-create some of those memories. Please let us know if a good samaritan turns it in...
I'm so sorry to hear that. I felt sick when I was reading your post. That is my worst fears.... I hope the airline will help you find them.
Oh no! I am so sorry... I hope the camera gets turned in and you get it back!!
Keep us posted.
Carole
Oh no!!!!! I am so sorry!!
I'm going to wish for you that someone honest found them and they'll be sent back to you.
Oh, I am so very sorry! I also hope that you will get your camera back. I understand that it can be replaced, however; the memories/pictures can't be!
All of our film for last summer's trip to St. Kitts/Nevis/St. Martin was destroyed, so I do understand your loss, frustration and pain.
Good luck!
Oh, how brutal. I'm joining in with everyone else in hoping for a safe return of the camera. I believe there are a lot of good people out there - let's hope one of them turned it in and it's just an airlines slowness factor! Keep calling them!
That is just horrible! My deepest sympathies. You will just have to go back and take the pictures all over again! - Susan
I live in fear of doing just that, losing my pictures. I'm obssessed with pictures, and feel your pain.
Maybe, just maybe, the airlines might have a lost and found?
I trully wish you luck.
:.(
Oh no! I was hoping to see some pics!
Please post a trip report!
Peace, Greenie
Emily,
I feel your pain -- two year ago when we moved to Portland, OR-- the movers lost a box with several pieces of framed art and photos -- I was physically ill over it -- but, of course you have to move on.
Hopefully you have wonderful memories of your trip and nothing can take those away from you. Don't let this unfortunate experience cast a negative light on the travel experience. 17 days in Grenada sounds like a fabulous time.
All the best,
Carol
oh e.j.! How awful.
I do hope you get the camera back.
I must say I have been in somewhat of a similar position. All my digital pics were on the harddrive of my last computer. I kept telling myself that I should back them all up. Of course, being the master procrastinator that I am I never did back them up.
Well, the computer crashed and...yup. Everything. Gone. Every picture I ever took in the past 6 or so years are all gone.
sigh.
I am so sorry for your tragic loss. On any of our trips my camera is like an extra appendage. It never leaves my hand. I love our vacation pictures and obsessed with scrap booking. I would be devastated if I lost my pictures.
Have you contacted the airline? Maybe they have a lost and found and will be able to return it to you. I hope you will be able to recover it.
I hope you get your camera back. If not I hope someone will send you pictures of Grenada. I know this will not replace your pictures, but the gesture might help. I can't wait to read your trip report but take your time. It will be wonderful whenever you submit it.
Awwww shucks, ej, I'm sorry to hear the news
. I know this trip was special to you. Just try to reflect and be grateful for what you do still have. Good health and many happy memories of your trip.
Brenda
Heartbreaking! I'm so sorry... I wish you luck with the airline. Hopefully the memories of the trip will outlast the memory of the lost materials.
Hopefully your name is somewhere on the camera bag? A friend left his camera "somewhere" on a tour of Russia and would you believe it was mailed to him about a month later!!
I put our name on the camera bag and our cameras. One never knows if it might do some good.
EJ, what a terrible thing to happen! Can't the airline find it? Keep after them, perhaps it will turn up after all. Praying it will come back to you.
This time around on our trip to Virgin Gorda, I was manic about not losing photos so we brought our laptop and downloaded the cards to the laptop and then burned CD's. Also, we had internet access so I posted my favorites to a Picasa web album for another safeguard.
I also will be very interested in reading about Grenada. We're trying to decide where to go next.
I feel just terrible for you. I agree with everyone else, keep bugging the airlines. I'm not sure what's worse--losing the camera or the pics from an incredible trip! On a hopeful note, I lost something valuable to me once while in Brazil at Iguazu Falls. It managed to make it back to me about 4-5 weeks later. I had my name on it. So don't give up hope!
Hi Emily,
Sorry about the camera....hope your trip was fabulous and you will have to return to Grenada soon to re-capture all the pictures on a new camera!!!
Rgds,
hari
Thanks for your kind words, everybody, and for sharing similar stories of your own loss. I'm a little less glum today than when I first discovered the camera missing.
No, I didn't have a label on the camera or the camera bag, but you can bet in the future I will. That was a hard lesson to learn.
Yes, I've contacted the airline's Lost & Found in Hartford, but nothing has come up. At this point I'm thinking of running an ad in the Hartford and Holyoke classified sections to see if it will turn up with a reward offered. Someone on the airline forum suggested showing up in person at the airport, which I might do on Monday, but I've had to work every day since I've been back and have to work this weekend, too, so I've not had a chance to go back down there.
Thanks again for the sympathy, y'all. And in turn I was saddened to hear about all of your losses in terms of photographs and the memories associated with them.
i lost all my hawaii pics, but they were stolen along with all my clothes etc. so i know how you feel, i had pics of sea turtles and the volcano that were irreplaceable. but they are only things and i keep memories in my head, and think well gee i have a good reason to go back!
ej,
I am soo sorry that you left your camera...that happened to me in St John..thankfully my mom had taking alot of pictures.
500 pictures...that's alot!Have you called the airline?Maybe someone will atleast give up the memory cards.
Christie
Maybe someone honest will turn it in. My husband left $1000 worth of electronic stuff (gameboy, etc.) in a NEW YORK CITY CAB! We called the cab company and they had it! They happily returned it to us and when we tried to give them a big tip, they refused! We insisted they take the tip, not only because we got our stuff back, but it restored our faith in humanity...especially in NYC!
Hopefully by some minor miracle the cards will pop up. Was there any ID attached, or did I miss that somewhere ? If so, there is still hope.
ej: Left it on the plane, huh? A likely tale! I think you probably had some kind of subconscious thingy going on.
There's only one cure for this problem... you have to schedule another trip to Grenada! Must have been some kind of wonderful trip and the place must be gorgeous (500 pictures!). How about a trip report so we can mentally picture what a good trip it was. Also, it would be interesting to read about getting there and what your villa was like. Do tell! Really though, I feel terribly for your loss. Now that the moment of mourning is over, I want to know how your trip was...
I feel your pain....on my first trip to Provo I took tons of pics of Jojo nuzzling my friend on the beach and swimming with others only to find out that the film [pre digital] wasn't advancing. That was in 1990 and I'm not sure I'm over it yet!!!! I know - I need to get a life.
ej, I'm sorry to hear about your pictures. We must all have a story. I used a new card on one of our family trips, and even though it seemed to be working, I had nothing when I arrived home. I'm glad you had a good trip. Owa
Owa, I may be wrong, but there's a good possibility that there may still be something on that card, or even on the memory on the camera. Don't write anything to that card until you've either retrieved the images or given up trying to restore them. It's not deleting a file that destroys it, but writing new data over it. Check with your local professional camera store. Or google online: "retrieving lost digital photos".

EJ, I keep hoping when I click on this thread that you will be able to report recovery of your camera.
Shariej-
Don't be too hard on yourself. Predigital for us? We got married in Hawaii and double-processed all our wedding pctures! We don't have ONE wedding picture that you can make out! But as Owa said, we must all have stories. Thank God for good, sweet memories.
Owa - Were you able to take Maggi's advice and get pictures? Oh, I hope so!
No, the pictures are gone, but I can still frame some of the pictures in my mind. Thanks for the advice Maggi. Owa
Just wanted to say a word of thanks to those of you offering your sympathies. It actually does help the mourning process!
I went to the airport in person a few days ago and nothing showed up, but manager took pity on me and filed a system-wide report with American Airlines in case it should turn up in Dubai or someplace.
Tux, I did do a small trip report. Or at least small by my standards. It's titled "I've got Sweet Grenada in my Heart."
