Has anyone been to both and able to compare? I have been to Vieques and like it a lot but wondering about trying something new.

Trip Ideas
These islands are almost the exact opposite of each other. Dominica is lush and green while Vieques is scrubby and relatively dry. Dominica doesn't have any white-sand beaches, while Vieques is known for its beaches. Vieques is a tiny island, while Dominica is not small (and it takes hours to drive from one end to the other). Vieques is easy to reach on a cheap ferry or flight, while Dominica is relatively difficult to reach from most places and is a fairly expensive flight.
Both islands have a lot of smaller accommodations, but I would guess that Dominica is more expensive over all.
Go to Dominica if you want to do whale-watching, hiking (especially through the volcanic areas), and diving. Snorkeling is good but not great, depending on where you go.
I'll add the birding is great (2 endemic parrots), the food awesome (health, mostly), the people nice, it's safe, lots of hiking, great nature destination
and really not that expensive compared to other Caribbean islands.
All the above refers to Dominica.
