Does anyone know Pickapeppa Sauce from Shooters Hill

While making dinner tonight I realized one of my favorite condiments, Pickapeppa Sauce, comes from Shooters Hill Jamaica.

We've planned a trip to Negril and I would love to visit the factory if it's possible and close by. Has anyone done so? I couldn't find any info on websites.

I wonder if we'll find Pickapeppa on all restaurant tables? In Costa Rica we used a similar sauce, Lizano, on all our bean and rice dishes. We came home with some and have even ordered more from an internet site to maintain our addiction to gallo pinto. Yum Yum!

Near Mandeville, Shooters Hill is the home to one of Jamaica’s best known (and one of our best loved) exports: Pickapeppa Sauce. It is used by cooks to spice up eggs, meats and sauces, and is a mix of tamarind, onions, tomatoes, sugarcane vinegar, mangoes, raisins and other spices. Pickapeppa Sauce is prepared in this small, nondescript factory. Tours aren’t scheduled, but if you’re interested, call Countrystyle (876- 962-7979 or 962-3265) to see if they can help you get a look at this fragrant operation.

I've been using Pickapepper Sauce for 20+ years. It's great. I first discovered it when the company I worked for tried (unsuccessfully) to purchase the company. You can find it on the shelves of most of the major supermarkets in the US.

It'll be about a 3 hour trip from Negril to Mandeville/and the factory tour is just that, not that inspiring to warrant the trip. Pickapeppa's a standard condiment on every Jamaican table. Go to the Hi-Lo supermarket in Negril for the commercial brands. Roadside in the Ferris Cross to Cave area on the South Coast road, you'll find hot sauce/pickled vegetables. Esau
Kerr at the Blue Hole Gardens/Roaring
River, about an hour from Negril up past the Frome sugar cane plantation fields sells a sinus-clearing hot sauce

I love Pickapeppa and have it with many dishes (probably the best steak sauce, ever). It has a great kick.
The first time I went to Port-of-Spain, T&T, I was eating lunch on my first day and there on the table was a shallow dish of sauce with a small spoon. When my chicken and rice was delivered, I put a spoonful of the sauce on it.
I took a nice big mouthful of chicken and started to chew.
My mouth exploded!!!!! I had never had anything so hot. I had just taken in an extreme dose of a sauce made of essentially pureed habanero (scotch bonnet) peppers.
Oh, sure, there was a dash of cane sugar and a bit of mango/raisin, and maybe a whiff of vinegar.
But it was 97% peppers, and it was hot!
I ran through a bunch of napkins wiping up tears and blowing my nose.
But, by the time I finished my meal, I found the proper ratio of sauce to food, and decided I liked it.
My Trini tablemate watched as I applied the sauce, and I should have been suspicious when, although he applied it liberally to his meal, he just sat and watched me take that first bite.
He had a good laugh at my discomfort, but not a nasty laugh, more of a shared experience laugh.
When we were leaving, I was laughing about, too.
I was there on business, and when I left a woman in the office kindly gave me a large bottle of her homemade sauce to take home.
My wife is a hot sauce fan and she loved it.
Wow, my face got warm just thinking about that.
I know, this was a Pickapeppa thread, but it stirred my memory about that Trinidad hot sauce.

golfguy- I love travel stories like that. The memory can really bring you back to a place, even many years later. That's why we always love to bring home some local food item.

We're down to the last few drops of our extra virgin olive oil from a small farm in Tuscay that brings me back to the al fresco dining we enjoyed at our villa last June. My kids still love the using the lizano sauce we discovered in Costa Rica. And, we can't look at an orange soda without remembering our first trip to India when the kids were little. Since we had to be very careful about the water and the girls never drank soda at home, I let them drink all the "Mirandas" they wanted. They had a permanent orange mustache on their face the whole trip!

We'll see about Pickapeppa in Jamaica. We can buy it here, but I'm sure flavoring our food with it in Jamaica will create a wonderful new taste association - bringing back what I'm sure will be wonderful memories of Jamaica!

Forgot to say thanks for all your feedback. You do provide the best info on this board. I guess a visit to the factory isn't worth the trip. I'll just enjoy the sauce out at restaurants! I have, however, taken notes on all of your other suggestions from my postings and I will be sure to follow up on those. Thanks again.
