Am planning a trip to St. Barts and would like to know if fluency in French is a necessity. Any comments on Village St. Jean Hotel would also be appreciated.
Do I need to know French in St. Barts?

Never been to St. Barts, but I'm sure that since you don't need to be fluent in French to visit France, the same goes for S.B.!! Have a great time!!
A little French can be helpfull at times, but not at all necessary. You will rarely encounter anyone in restaurants or shops who doesn't have a little English. Start with "bonjour" and then switch.
Have stayed several times at Village St. Jean so obviously like it - well run, nice people, good prices, especially off-season. It's a 5 minute walk to St. Jean beach but a lot longer coming back - get a car.
My wife and I stayed in SB for a week in Feb. We can speak some french, but never needed to speak a word of it.
