culebra or vieques with children??

Hi..My husband, myself, and our 3 children (ages 6, 8, 11) are headed to Puerto Rico in a few weeks. We will be in San Juan/Isla Verde but want to take a day trip to either Culebra or Vieques. We love the beach and I want my husband to see beautiful beaches. With the kids in tow....what would be our better excursion. If we need to, we may stay overnight. Any recommendations on restaurants on either island...or will we need to pack a lunch?

if you go to Culebra, Flamenco beach is a must see. it's beautiful !!! white soft powery sand, clear water. Water may or may not be calm depending on the time you go, but there is a very shallow, calm area close to the rock pier that are good for kids to play. We go there everyday with our 2 small kids. they loved it. Culebra is pretty small, there is nothing to see down town, there are only 1 or 2 tiny gift shops and that's about it. you can walk through the entire "down town" in about 20 minutes. I recommend MamaCita's for lunch or dinner. Food is pretty good, or if you don't feel like going to town, at the end of Flamenco beach where the picnic area is, you can get some pretty decent barbecue chicken/pork and rice dish for about $5.

I recommend an overnight. I've only been to Vieques but the ferry rides to both islands stop in the early evening and takes over an hour.
I think your kids are the perfect age to visit the biobay.

I agree, it will be so much better if you plan on staying at least one night. Our family of four stayed in a room at a place called Bananas on the isle of Vieques. Bananas is a restaurant with rooms in the back area. Our room even had a little screened-in porch area which made it feel more spacious. And the price was very good. If you go to Vieques, don't miss the Biobay tours which take place at night. It's an absolute Don't Miss!

One more thing I meant to mention, that the picture you'll find in my profile is of me sitting in the screened-in porch area that I was describing in the last post. Bon Voyage!

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR RESPONSES....WE ARE GOING TO EITHER CULEBRA OR VIEQUES DURING A FULL MOON...SO WOULD THE BIOBAY TRIP BE WORTH IT? HOW LONG IS THE FERRY RIDE FROM FAJARDO TO CULEBRA OR VIEQUES?

If there is a full moon, that would lessen the bio bay experience. In fact, I'm not even sure they do the tours during a full moon. (?) To see the dinoflagellates emit their lights, it's best to have total darkness. As I recall the Ferry ride was almost 45 minutes to Vieques. Good luck.
