Cuba away from the resort life style

I am going to Cuba in march and was wondering if anyone knows how easy or difficuls it is to travel around and stay at guest houses instead of the resorts.

There is a program for doing this but I can't remember what it's called. It is based in Toronto and caters mostly to (obviously) Canadians. I will try to remember and post again.

Heard of a new resort opening up. Really safe and not so good food. But your stay there is compliments of the USGovernemnt. Heard that it is profiling the guests prior to taking reservations.

We didn't stay at guest houses but as far as travelling around - no problem. We rented a jeep and toured all over. We hired a young Cuban man to act as our guide (he worked up the beach at a beach bar and as it was raining that day he had the day off). He took us to the market, the bank and to a local restaurant (run by Cubans for Cubans) and we had the best meal of our vacation there! The roads are not marked with signs so it can be tricky not getting lost. We drove by prisons, military installations, government buildings etc. We took pictures of schools and other buildings etc. and were never stopped or intimidated - no different than driving by similar places here. I wouldn't try to take a picture of a government building or military installation here or there.
