We'll be in St Kitts for one day during our cruise. Any suggestions for things to do/see? I really HATE going on the tightly packed overpriced cruiseline tours, but want to see something of the island.
Interests include snorkeling (we have own equipment so the info I need is a good snorkeling beach and how to get there)
fishing (husband likes fishing)
Walking/hiking
thanks
kathy

I have spent a week on St. Kitt's as well as stopped for one day while on a cruise. I have 2 possible suggestions.
Definitely do not take an overpriced ship's excursion.
1. (my first choice for someone who has never been to the island before) - take a taxi tour that includes Brimstone Hill (a UNESCO world heritage site - magnificently restored, great views), Caribelle Bateek (the grounds are lovely and it is on the way to Brimstone Hill), the Black Rocks (interesting Volcanic Rock formations). A tour that includes all of the above and loops around the entire northern part of the island will take about 3-4 hours. The taxi drivers are well trained in doing tours and will stop for photo ops and explain stuff. Brimstone Hill has an admission charge but is well worth it. Taxi Drivers will be waiting at the docks and they have standard price lists for tours. It has been a couple of years since I was there but I believe such a tour would cost between $50-60 for 2 people.
2. Or (not my first choice for a first visit but still nice) get a taxi to take you to Turtle Beach - some snorkeling, great views of Nevis, monkeys and the drive there is scenic. There is a friendly restaurant on the beach that supplies free beach chairs, an outdoor hose shower and a clean toilet - so if you go there buy something from them - although no pressure is put on you to do so.
If I were you, I'd forget St. Kitts and take the ferry over to Nevis. There will be taxis waiting to take you wherever you want to go. Go to Pinny's Beach and have lunch at Sunshines. Incrfedible food and a fun, non-touristy place to go. It's adjacent to the Four Seasons so you can check that out as well.
