NO
However, they do go to St. Thomas and ferry the people from the ship to St. John.
Yes, there are always tons of cruise ship people in st john when the ships are in st thomas (Which is pretty much everyday in season)
You would be well served to reference the USVI site to determine how many ships will be in port on St. Thomas each day you are there. Some days there may only be a couple of ships and some days there may be 5 or 6. When they disembark from their ships you can see them coming to St. John like a big wave and you do not want to be in their path.
When we were on the Zuiderdam, the ship stopped briefly, very early in the morning, at St. John, to disembark passengers who signed up for STJ excursions. You were not allowed to leave the ship unless you had a ship excursion, everyone else had to wait for St. Thomas. I was not awake and watching, but I imagine they used a tender to ferry passengers to Cruz Bay, since I don't think STJ is equipped to dock the big cruise ships.
No cruise ships, but lots of cruise ship passengers.
The good news is that most of the cruisers go to Trunk Bay, and St. John has LOTS of other beaches.
When we were in St. John the week before Easter, every day was a cruise ship day. The local info brochure posted the ships that were in port at St. Thomas, and every day had at least one or two ships; some days had 4! We loved Trunk Bay - just get there early! We got there before the crowds, which started arriving about 10am-ish.
It sounds awful doesn't it with all those cruise ships vying for position on Trunk Bay... but I think it's not that goddawfull. I've been to Trunk Bay many times and everytime there's cruise ship people but don't worry, the beach won't look like those crowded Florida or California beaches. Your best bet is to get there early or go there late. Most cruise ships are evacuating by 3 p.m., and I think there's nothing more glorious than hanging around to see the beginnings of the sunset at Trunk Bay around 5-6 p.m. (Park is officially closed then, but they won't be rounding folks up to kick them out).
My experience at Trunk Bay was similar to the scene in Caddyshack where the caddies are allowed to use the country club pool.
We got to Trunk Bay early and were 2 of maybe a dozen people on the beach and it was wonderful. Very quiet and serene which was exactly the experience we came to the islands for. A couple of hours later buses started rolling in from the cruise ships and suddenly there were screaming children and loud obnoxious people everywhere. The underwater snorkeling path was unusable due to the number of people (mainly unsupervised children) trying to navigate it. The water was full of floats, crying babies, etc. and the beach became elbow to elbow in about half an hour.
We packed up and went to another beach because luckily there are many great ones on St John.
That is why we have always checked the cruise ship schedule ever since.
Actually, the last time I went over to St. Johns from St. Thomas I was disappointed that the place was mobbed with folks actually staying there...
