Trip Report: 1st Time to St. John (Paradise!!)

Like the old saying goes, you can't get there from here.
There's no "best way" - there's the ONLY WAY and that is to fly but you do have choices.
You can go on American Airlines - First you'll have to go from St. John to St. Thomas (STT) by ferry. From St. Thomas you'll have to fly to Puerto Rico and then to Miami before going on to San Jose (Costa Rica).
I believe you might be able to fly from STT to Fort Lauderdale on Sprint and catch their flight to San Jose. This will eleminate 1 stop.
Lastly, you could fly on Continental from STT to the Dominican Republic and get a connecting flight to Panama City and a second connecting flight to San Jose.
Thank you! I was afraid it was going to be complicated---unless we made each leg of the flight a destination for a couple days. Hmmmm will have to think about that.
It is almost certainly doable in a single day if you connect through Miami. The ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay sails until about midnight most days. You can fly from Miami direct to St. Thomas (several flights a day, many fewer flights from St. Thomas to Puerto Rico) on American. There are early flights from San Jose to Miami, which should allow you to be in St. John by afternoon, I would guess. But it's going to be a punishing day of travel.
A friend just did it going from St. Thomas to Costa Rica for dental treatment (much cheaper there) and used the Miami connection on American with no problems at all. Doug is correct about the ferries to St. John. From Red Hook it's only about 15 minutes.
