Cash, credit or travelers cheques???

Getting close! I know U.S. currency is used on Provo. Should we rely mainly on credit cards with some cash? Does anyone take travelers cheques? What is the prefered way to pay? I assume there are some cash only places? Thanks.

The $US dollar is the official currency. Credit Cards are accepted almost everywhere and certainly by all major vendors. Like most destinations occasionaly you'll come across a "small" vendor who accepts only cash.

Traveller's Checks are accepted but in this day and age of ATM's they are becomming obsolete. Bring a modest amount of cash, use your credit card for most purchases and your ATM card when or if you need to replenish your available cash. No need for TC's.

I would second that. We just got back from there and we didn't need any travelers checks.

Thanks for your replies. I do wonder if Travelers Cheques are becoming a thing of the past. We'll use cards and cash. Thanks.

I've had vendors, shops and restuarants in Mexico refuse Travelers Checks. I've also had resturants in Las Vegas refuse to take traveler's checks and had to go to the casino cage to exchange them for cash. Since them I have never bothered with them. I've also noticed I've haven't seen a commerical for an American Express travelers check in a very long time.

We use cash for everything and bring a credit card for emergenices.

I think travelers checks rapidly are becoming (or have become)obsolete, but when I was in Provo in 2007, they were widely accepted there (and I think they still are), so if you do want to bring them, you should be able to use them almost everywhere. Personally, I use credit cards whenever possible and don't like carrying a lot of cash, so in the past I brought some travelers checks so I didn't have to bring a lot of cash. I used to get TCs without a fee at AAA, but they stopped selling them a couple of years ago, and with the bank fees, I have stopped getting TCs.

If you are planning to use credit cards and ATMs, be aware that even though TCI's official currency is USD, some credit cards (and possibly ATM cards) have started assessing the fees that used to be currency conversion fees for all purchases made outside the US, regardless of what currency is used. I now have a Capital One credit card and ATM card that I use for travel outside the US to avoid these fees.

Be careful with using ATM cards for getting cash out of ATM Machines. I know a lot of islands have trouble with thieves adding a card reader onto the ATM and its quite common to come home and find your card has been compromised. I'd recommend cash and travelers checks and avoid credit cards simply because of the fees you're charged these days for International charges. Check with your cc company to see what your fees are. They are as high as 5% per transaction sometimes now.
