Carribean vacation with infant

Jump to last reply

hello, we are planning a December getaway with our six month baby (will be 6 month in dec) in the carribean. this will be out first time travelling with her and I was hoping parents with experience would offer advice/guidance:

1. what was your experience travelling with your baby to Caribbean? do you think its ok to travel with a 6 month to Caribbean?
2. is the climate comfortable for infants if we are in shade? (not too humid)
3. how did you travel between airport and hotel? (did you hold baby in your arms)
4. what things do you recommend to pack with you? (eg pack and play)
5. how did you cover baby while at the beach?

any other info would be sooo appreciated!!!

Our granddaughter first came (with her parents) to visit us in the Caribbean when she was just 6 months old - and she's come at least once each year since (she's now 10).

    So to answer your questions:

    1) Yes, it's OK to travel with your 6 month old. You just have to realize that YOU will be your child's main source of entertainment, much the same as you would back home.

    2) December is a great month as the temperatures are not too hot (think day time temps in the low 80's F.) and humidity is lower than during the summer months. There's also nice cooling breezes at that time of year. Just remember, your child's skin is sensitive so be sure to keep him/her covered up and protected from too much sun.

    3) Caribbean islands do not have "child protection laws" so if you don't bring a car seat with you you'll have to hold your child on your lap since taxis won't have "child seats" available. Now here's something to think about - Although airlines will let you hold your 6 month old in your lap you should consider purchasing a seat for him/her on the plane and strapping him/her into an approved "child car seat" that you bring with you. If you think about it, you probably wouldn't hold your child on your lap in a car going 30 MPH when you are at home so why would you even consider holding your child in your lap in a plane going almost 400 MPH. If you do this, you'll have the "car seat" available for when you are riding around on the island.

    4) Pack some of the same items you'd bring when you visit "grandma & grandpa" for the weekend. Don't worry about bringing too many disposal diapers, you can buy them once you get on island.

    5) While on the beach keep your baby in the shade of an umbrella. Have him/her wear a sun hat and always have a shirt. Don't let your baby spend any more than 5 or 10 minutes at a time in the sun.

Use common sense and you should be just fine.
