We have gone to St. Thomas during hurricane season and as it turns out there was a hurricane near the carribean. We got some rain but it was not non-stop & most days had sun and it never came close to the island. In our travels we have always been told Aruba is outside of the Hurricane belt. We have gone to Aruba twice on a cruise stop but we have never actually flown there and stayed there.
You could also explore Costa Rica and Punta Cuna is also another fun destination.

Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire and Trinidad & Tobago are all pretty far south and the risk of hurricanes on those islands is quite low. The further north you go the odds of encountering a hurricane or tropical storm increase. That said, the odds of a storm striking any given island during a particular week are small, even in September. But the risk is always there.

One thing, Aruba probably won't meet your definition of being "not too touristy" - it's a very popular island a so by definition it will be "touristy" and because of it's southern location it gets a lot of tourists in September and October due to the low risk of hurricanes. It does have some amazing white sand beaches so that might off-set the "touristy" aspect for you.

Following the advise of one of your respondants, I live in Trinidad and Tobago and they are correct - our islands are on the edge of the hurricane belt and are usually spared the wrath of summer hurricanes.

I have been to the isklands mentioned and probably 8-9 north of them in hurricane season and probably we have been lucky for we had probably 5-6 all cloudy days but only 3 raib dains and no days with 50-60 mph winds and heavy rains. It is a crap shoot espeially with the erratic patterns over the last 4-5 years.such as 12" of snow in NYC in early Oct.
That said I did not like Trinadad at all. It is mainly an industrial island. Tobago is lush but we did not enjoy the locals though I cannot explain why. The beaches were o,.k. but there is basically no snorkeling if you enjoy that.
Aruba is in my opinion too honky tonk for a honeymoon but that is just me because I was not in to bar scenes plus there is no snorkeling but lovely beaches.You should know Aruba has the Divi breeze of 14 mph year round but you get used to it but is out of the hurricane beklt as is Curacao.
Curacao though has a 20--30 mph windy season from Sept. through late Oct has decent beaches at tghe WEST END and good snorkeling there but you need a rental car. The wind by the way is not daily but not unusual. So each place has it's positives and negatives in terms of weather.
I know little about the frequency of hurricanes that hit Bermuda but it is a beatiful island and one we enjoyed very much with lovely beaches, a bit of snorlkeling, good resturantants but a bit pricey and some lovely hotels. There are no cars but you use taxi's and if you go don't ruin your honeymoon by renting scooters and breaking a leg. It happens often. I think people forgey aboutBermuda and in Sept. the high will be 80-82 and lows should be 70.
