Caribbean Cruise Info re snorkelling/diving
My husband and I are going on a carribean cruise, 21 December (Puerto Plata, St. Kitts, Antigua, Martinique, St. Maarten, Tortola). This is our first cruise looking for any helpful information re good sites to see. Interested in good beaches and good snorkelling and diving spots on these islands.

Of the islands you are visiting, I've only been to St. Kitts. The snorkelling is OK - not terrific. Of the beaches there I'd recommend Turtle (has concessions) OR find a taxi driver you like and ask him/her to drop you off at one of the south beaches ... most of them are completely isolated, you can have the beach to yourselves and arrange for the driver to come back in a couple of hours. - be sure to bring beverages, etc. since there is NOTHING on these beaches except the occasional monkey or sand crab. One of the beaches (can't remember which) has an abandoned pier and tug boat left over from a hurricane that provides good structure for the fish.

Carol: Just returned from St. Kitts for a week of diving and had the best day there going out to Sandy Point and diving Paradise Reef. It is one of the largest most colorful reefs there and it is a must see if you have the opportunity to go out on a dive boat. Kenneth's Diving did a great job. I would highly recommend them.

Tortola - we spent a week there and did 6 dives with Baskin in the Sun -- great range, from the sunken MHS Rhone where the movie The Deep was filmed (80 ft depth), to colourful reefs off the many surrounding islands. They'll cater to a cruise ship passenger.
St. Maarten - spent a day during a cruise - body surfed at Dawn Beach/Oyster Pond (check Fodors for the exploring tips), didn't find much to look at while snorkeling, didn't dive there
Martinique - you have to take a ferry to the section where the good beaches/snorkelling/diving is, so we didn't have time to do a dive, but the snorkeling from shore was good (Pointe du Bout).
Enjoy your vacation.
