My husband and I are going to St. Kitts in March. We'll be staying in Frigate Bay. He really wants to rent mopeds, which I think is ridiculous. I am much more interested in renting a car for a few days or getting around by taxi. Can anyone give advice about the best way to get around on St.Kitts? We'll be there for 4 days. We also want to do a day trip to Nevis. Thanks a lot.

I was to St. Kitts in October of 1999 and loved it. As for transportation, we took cabs. They were fixed rate depending on where you wanted to go with 4 people in the cab. All the cabs are vans and all the vans have a name.
A tour of the island with the driver acting as tour guide was $60 US if I remember correctly. All the cab drivers have to take a course on island history.
As for a day trip to Nevis, if you're interested in a catarman trip, we had a great time on the Eagle. You can also take a ferry to Nevis if you want to spend more time on the island rather than on the water.
Have a great time!
I've been involved with St. Kitts for 14 years and would never rent a moped unless your an avid driver and like dangerous living. Driving is on the left side and taxi's will run you over. If you go on the South Peninsula, it is up and down and when you get caught in the rain, that's another story. Do yourself a favor and rent a car.
we were in st.kitts dec99. Stayed at jack tar. Not much to the island. But we did rent a car. Do it. We had it for three days and got a car on evis for a day( part of the deal). We took the ferry to nevis. Check the return times we almost got stuck there. Drive north to nesbit plantition. the beach was unreal.
You must drive to the south end of the island Turtle beach. When we were there their was'nt any one insite. the driving was good do'nt worry about right/left side driving there is not that much traffic to make it a problem.
my wife have been to the caribbean many times and went to st. kitts and nevis during the winter of 1998. if your trip is not until march, our best advice is: don't go. change your reservations now. st. kitt's is an impoverished dump with unimpressive beaches, underwhelming hotels and a complete lack of island charm. after 2 days on st. kitt's we fled to nevis which is much nicer (if you must go, check out the 4 seasons), but still doesn't compare to anguilla or st. bart's. sorry for the rude awakening, but this is the kind of advice i wish i had been given before our trip to st. kitt's.
David,David,David,-- You sound like the same flamer we know from other newsgroups. With your lack of intelligence and knowledge, it's not worth a response.
ok.ok.. here's the real truth since I live in St. Maarten and know all the islands well.
first of all, do NOT rent mopeds on St. Kitts..too dangerous..rent a car
second of all,of all the islands in the area, St. Kitts probably has less tourism, but it can be very charming. The beaches there are not the greatest. Frigate Bay is probbaly the best area. The Nesbit plantation and that area is really something unusal.the island is very pretty and lush but there are not a lot of modern chi chi stores there like you would find on St. Maarten or St. Barth's.It is a poor island but it is not a dump
Nevis is quiet and laid back and very pretty. take the ferry over. an easy day trip from St. Kitts
St Barths is small and charming..very pretty.very french and very chi chi with lots of boutiques and shopping. great beaches
St. maarten is very developed.great beaches. French side is vey nice.. great restaurants. casinos and night life. great shopping.
Anguilla is flat and dry with beautiful beaches.. nice people.. beautiful resorts
each island has something for everybody..depends on what you want
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the advice. Despite the one negative response, we are definitely still planning to go to st. kitts. We will not rent mopeds, now that I've heard from everyone. Thanks again.
