car rental needed?

Staying at the Westin on Grand Cayman for 5 days, and would like to see some of the area outside there; is local transportation acceptable, or is a rental car preferred? Thanks!

We rented a car for the whole week, used Avis and was very satisfied. (rented a Honda civic) By the way, we stayed at Villas of Galleon, right next door.

Depending on how much you want to be out and about, a car for a day or two might be the answer and use the buses or taxi the other days (or walk if it's nearby).

Family emergency; wasn't able to answer sooner. Thanks so much for the suggestions! I think maybe we'll keep it the whole time to allow for flexibility. I do appreciate the help!

We also stayed at the Villas of the Galleon, right next to the Westin. We rented a jeep form Avis for the whole week and it sure was nice to have the car anytime we needed it. It just takes a few minutes to get accustomed to driving on the left!

you could walk locally, but definitely need to rent a car for a few day trips around the island. You can also take the ferry to Rum point (gorgeous) but need to drive to the East End and the Blow Holes, and the best snorkeling spots are the ones you find out of Georgetown (where the hotels are).
