Caneel Bay Resort: Reefs just offshore? Also Cozumel Hotel Presidente question.

Hi everyone...these forums are great! I've decided to go to Caneel Bay because I want to be able to have great snorkeling right off the beach while my fiance lounges on shore. My question is this: Why is the snorkeling so great (aka what attracts the fish)? Is the floor covered with coral or are there rocks or is it just sand? I've also heard great things about the snorkeling at the Hotel Presidente in Cozumel. Do you need to know Spanish to get around there? I don't know any. Thanks for your help!

The snorkeling at the Presidente is some of the best I've ever done.

The hotel is delightful and the staff is the friendliest we've ever encountered.

We've been going to Cozumel and staying at the Presidente every year for 10 years and love it.

While knowing some Spanish makes your experience (I think) a little more fun, all of the staff speaks English - many of them very well.

You will have a great time there even if the only Spanish you know is "mas tequila y cerveza por favor!" (More tequila and beer please!)

The snorkeling at Caneel is great. There are several beaches right on the property that are "cove-like" in their formation. This type of beach tends to have more coral formations that attract various fish, as well as the rocks along the edges of the cove. Fish are attracted to both the rocks and coral (as they feed off these), however the more coral and the more variety of coral, the more fish. There are plenty of coral formations off Caneel's beaches that attract fish.

When we stayed at Caneel they offered a brief instructional class in one of the lounges in the evening with a slide show on the types of fish and coral you would typically encounter snorkeling. This was interesting and I would recommend it ... it also informs you about certain types of coral to not go near (i.e., the sea urchin type with the spikes). Also, while you're at Caneel they can provide you with a map of the snorkeling areas and recommend which areas are better for snorkeling at certain times of the day. The map also has information regarding the water currents and how they shift during the times of the day that is very helpful to know.

Don't miss the slide show mentioned earlier - you learn alot about the local fish and snorkeling.

My highlight was seeing a sea turtle swim right by me. Best snorkeling I've done.

A great resort where when you check in you get snorkel gear included - and you tend to use it very day and don't have to turn it back in until you leave.

It's been awhile - but my favorite Caribbean resort (the big decision each day is which of the 3 restaurants do I want to eat in and which of the 7 beaches do I want to sit on!) Have fun.

PS when I got tired snorkeling I'd get one of their floating mats and lay on it and just place my face and mask in the water - doesn't get any easier!

No - in upstate NY - so with about a foot of snow on the ground, Caneel is sounding mighty good right about now!

Have a great trip - you'll love it.
