Caneel Bay Honeymoon
We have almost decided on Caneel Bay for our honeymoon in May. Has anyone been there? My only concern is that it will be too fancy.
We are 25 and 32. We want upscale, however not stuffy. We are very laid back and really just want to relax in our bathing suits most of the week, dressing up for a romantic dinner a couple of times. We are drinkers, but don't want to go to a "party" resort. If there is a night life on the island, I could see us going dancing once or twice, but that's not high on our priority list. We love food. It doesn't have to be fancy. I imagine walking down a beautiful beach, stumbling across a shack, and having amazing seafood and a few beers.
The most important thing is romance. I definetly want to go to a place where we do not have to leave the resort (or the room for that matter) all week if we don't want to. And I have always dreamed of one of those private dinners on the beach.
Is Caneel Bay the resort for us?

caneel is precisely upscale but not stuffy/fancy. in my opinion very romantic. has seven of it's own beaches. st. john is not known for nightlife but there are a couple places to go have a drink and maybe dance a little.
there are few places left in the caribbean where you'll find yourself "walking down a beautiful beach, stumbling across a shack, and having amazing seafood and a few beers". try taking an excursion over to jost van dyke. they will drop you in the water just off the beach - you swim in & can go to the 'soggy dollar bar' http://www.soggydollar.com/faqs/ or go to 'foxys' http://www.foxysbar.com/gallery/main.php (on the FAQ page for the soggy dollar you'll find a list of all the tour operators who can take you to their beach/jost or you can take the interisland ferry).

I have stayed many times at Caneel. The grounds are gorgeous, the beaches are postcard perfect and the rooms are spread throuout the massive acerage offering maximum privacy.
Best room locations, in my opinion, are Scott Beach, premium beachfront, Hawksnest Beach. beachfront, (usually, you will share the beach with just a handful of other guests, or at times have it to yourself.) Premium Oceanview, very private with your own patio, it overlooks the sea with a marvelous view of St Thomas, particularly romantic at night. All of their beaches are wonderful and never overcrowded.
I am not sure about the beachside private dinner, but they do have one available at the Equator Resturant, a restored sugar mill. Possibly upon requst, they may do a beachside dinner from thier seaside terrace restaurant. It never hurts to ask.
Another possibility you may wish to explore is Little Dix Bay. They do have private seaside dinners. It too, is a beautiful place. My favorite room there is a beachfront cottage, a gorgeous room complete with a luxurious two vanity large bathroom, outdoor shower, two sides of wall to ceiling glass with pull drapes for privacy, which is set in a park like setting. What may appeal to honeymooners is their complimentary boatdrops. They will take you to a private beach where you can be just by yourselves.
Guests of both resorts are very nice, well mannered and not stuffy.
Since both places are 'sister' resorts, you could opt to spend time at each resort since shuttle service between the two is provided.
Both resorts are very special places.

Thanks for all the advice! Caneel sounds like the right place for us. @Virginia - Fantastic Advice!
How about drink/food prices at Caneel? I understand that it is a Caribbean resort and they will be expensive, I'm just worried it will be $15 for a beer.

You will love Caneel! It's beautiful...amazing beaches and plenty to do, or just relax. We went on our honeymoon in May, 5 years ago and it was great! You should venture down to Cruz Bay and go out to dinner/drinks. We loved the Lime Inn.
