Can you drink the water???

Have the opportunity to head to DR for a February vacation but have read a number of posts to some other boards about making sure you take plenty of pepto and immodium.

I've also seen some of the posts hear and most seem to be glowing reports. Don't want to miss the opportunity to visit what sounds like a great island but also don't want to spend a vacation running to the head.

Any comments??

It is a very beautiful island, the beaches are super the water amazing. You have to drink bottled water. Even in the shower try not to get the water in your mouth. Brush your teeth with the bottled water. We went with 3 other couples and 5 out of the 8 got sick. Just be very careful of the drinks...

Definitely do not drink the water. My boyfriend and I had stomach aches every night and didn't figure it out until we stopped drinking the tap water! Bottled water is the only water to drink.

Sorry, just drink the bottled water.. As for the drinks..the more fruit based drinks like pina coladas (especially coconut based) the more likely you are to have stomach problems.. It took me many years to learn that sad fact..lol It seems coconut is a natural laxative...Just as a precaution I take one Immodium in the a.m.... If worse comes to worse....I have a Lomotil..but no major problems... will be in the D. R. ourselves this February.

My husband and I went to Punta Cana last year, neither one of us got sick. I avoided the lettuce at the dinner buffet and made sure I ate yogurt each morning. We did bring along Pepto and Immodium just in case.

We went to Punta Cana last year. Stayed at the Riu Melao and loved it so much that we are going back in 3 weeks!
Other posts are correct about drinking the tap water. Bottled water is provided in rooms and ice from the bar is safe...
Just use common sense about over-doing things...Too much sun and alcohol can make anyone sick.
Don't miss out on going to a beautiful place like this!
P.S. The post about the coconut-based drinks is true.(just ask my husband!)

I have never been sicker in my entire life than I was in DR. It continued for 10 days after I got home. Bring your own water and don't even consider drinking anything with ice in it.
