Callaloo-can you help me?

I have posted a message on some Out Islands and Bahamas sites but have not gotten an answer yet- I read your post to steviegene where you said the Out Islands are your favorite place - MINE. too. I am trying to find out the best month to plan for calm seas (to use the small whalers they have at SCYC), warm water(snorkeling) and the least rain for Staniel Cay. Have you been and can help me? I am looking ahead to next year so am wide open for a suggestion of the best time to go. Thanks.

ishkribbl,

I haven't been to Staniel Cay (yet!), but from my understanding of the weather and sea conditions in the Bahamas generally -- and balancing the risks of cold weather, hot weather, hurricane season, etc. -- I would suggest April through June, and then mid-October through early November, as the best time to have calm seas, warm water and less chance of rain (though a freak week in the Abacos of all rain in June of '02 proves that there are NO guarantees!)

I've looked at those Whalers, and they seem small to me, though they'll probably give you enough range to get where you want to go for a week. It's a nice package they offer at SCYC, by including the boat and fuel (I priced it out for us for this year, but we are going to Cape Santa Maria instead). If it were me, I'd try to get the bigger (17') boat they have, but if the water's calm and you're not too ambitious (no deep sea fishing...), you should be fine.

We'll be waiting anxiously for your trip report!

Thanks- I have wanted to go to SC for a long time but did not realize until recently it was finally more accessible. We are already booked into a house on Eleuthera for April so I will have to wait a while longer but am already looking. The 13' boat sounded tiny to me too but on all the reviews people say that it is fine to get you to snorkeling IF the water is calm so that is why I was looking for info.since the package price was good. I have also spent that week of rain in Abaco and finally learned to stay away from the first two weeks of June to be safe but I sure love it there. Have fun in Long Island- I have had lunch and walked the beach at Cape Santa Maria but we rented a house from Stella Maris the time we were there. We had some fun side trips kayaking up near Columbus Point (is that the right name?) and a day long snorkel trip with the SM people. Have you been to Long Island before? Don't miss the Rock Pools on SM property (public area) if you are a snorkler.

It will be our first trip to Long Island, and not until late next year, but we're looking forward to it! Anguilla this winter is next up.

Where are you staying on Anguilla? I have never been there although we strongly considered it a couple of years ago then went elsewhere. If you get near it, the house I had wanted to rent was called Bayberry- on the SE end of Rendezvous Bay- I would love to know what it really looks like and would love to hear a trip report of your trip. I think I will just have to get there one day!

We're going to be staying at Ku, on Shoal Bay East. I will definitely do a trip report when we get back, but first I gotta get there!
