Buying groceries at St. Maarten

Will be renting a condo at Cupecoy Beach at the end of January. Wondering about grocery prices? Would it be worthwhile to bring some with us from U.S?

Hi Linda,
We were in St Maarten last week
we didn't buy any groceries while we were there but from what I saw they don't appear to have the kind of grocery stores there like we have,(canada & US)mostly eastern carribean stuff and since it is 3rd world I'd reccomend bringing what you need with you.Wonderful island though, have a great trip.

There are 2 or 3 supermarkets on St. Martin that are comparable to US stores. Two are on the Dutch side, one on the airport side of Philipsburg, another on the road to Marigot in Cole Bay. There may be another new one on the Dutch side, and there is Match at Marigot These have most anything you would want, except often in Dutch or French versions. Meat may be an exception. Have never comparison shopped, but groceries are probably somewhat more expensive than in US. Not worth lugging a lot of stuff unless you are very fixed in your wants. St. Martin is actually a pretty sophisticated and cosmopolitan island with a lot of European goods.

Bought groceries while in St. Maarten in February. The stores we were in were just like the supermarkets we have here. We were able to get everything we needed for our week's stay. The prices were perhaps a little higher, but certainly not high enough to justify dragging foodstuffs from home. The one we went to most often was in Phillipsburg, nice, big, clean. Have a great time.

Linda:

There are 4 major grocery stores on the Island. Three on the Dutch side (2 Food Centers and Ram's Food World, plus Match on the French side).

All four are just like what we have here. In fact 3 on the Dutch side are new, 2 were rebuilt after the Hurricane in 1995 and Food World has only been open 1 year.

You will probably find that most items are a little more expensive. You can take some non-perishible items with you such as a can of Tuna, Crackers, Nuts, Coffee, Tea. You can also take a cooler with perishible items if you wish. We usually do both and then buy whatever else we need. Cheese is very good and reasonable. French Bread is wonderful. Wine and liquor are CHEAP.

We own a condo across the street from Cupecoy Beach Club at Tradewinds at Cupecoy.

There is a little superette in Back of our condo's on the Summit Road, also another superette at the corner next to Le Bistro Gourmand restaurant. Speaking of which you should try this restaurant - check out their menu.

Other favorite restaurants are in Marigot at the Marina, Tropicana, Le Chanticlear. Also in Marigot La Diva on Rue de Hollande. In Phillipsburg try Da Livio's and Antoines. In Grand Case try L'Auberge Gourmand. In the Cul de Sac north of Grand Case a must is Le Piccolo. In the Simpsons Bay area try The Boathouse (casual and reasonable) and one of our all time favorites Saratoga (John is the owner/chef - he is american.

If you don't have a rental car try Summer Set Car Rental on the Summit Road Claude Arnell is the owner. This is within walking distance. Tell Claude that I sent you. Tel #54138.

Have a great time. We go back Feb 11 for 2 weeks.

In Marigot, there is a SUPERB supermarket called Le Match...It is amazing and there is another one also called something Imports which is pretty good too. You can definitely buy your groceries in St.Martin without a problem. We were never disappointed with anything we bought (bread, fruits, refreshments, etc...) GO FOR IT!
