Bugs on Palm Island

I was just wondering if anyone has been to palm island in september. My fiancee and I were going to book our honeymoon there untill we started reading up on it and found out about the "bug problem". Any info would be a great help. If anyone had a better suggestion for a destination that would also be helpfull.
Thanks...

No, you should be safe. This is the only island in the entire Caribbean that doesn't have a single bug.

Okay, sorry about that. I was feeling a little punchy.

First of all, what do you mean by bug problem? It's the tropics, and insects are inescapable. Chances are extremely high that you will encounter mosquitos and no-see-ums (as far as the more unpleasant bugs go). Whether there are so many that they will be a nuisance depends largely on weather/humidity and whether or not your own personal chemistry attracts these critters.

You might also see spiders and/or palmetto bugs.

Thank goodness for all of the lizards there, right?

Can't be remotely helpful about honeymoon suggestions unless you give us an idea of what you're looking for. Knowing that you're considering Palm Island only tells me a little about your budget, that you would consider an AI, that you don't mind extra travel to get to a secluded place, and that you don't mind not having any nightlife or shopping. But it doesn't indicate that those are actually your *preferences* for a honeymoon.

I don't know about Sept but I'm sure its no different than any other month -- there are mosquitos/no-see-ums. Just bring repellent and you're fine. If you're one that always gets bit (like me!) you need to keep it on day and night.

I've been on Palm Island a number of times when Windjammer used to stop there and it was always my least favorite stop. There used to be (and I can't imagine it's changed that much) tons of sand fleas.

Have you looked at Anguilla or St. Barts? It's low season and you could get a very nice villa for a great price. Lot's of times during low season, villas on St. Barts incudes a rental car.

I guess i should of been alittle more specific. I was reading on this site and alot of people were complaining about the amount of insects on the island. They were saying it was due to the water in the center of the island. Not to sure if they were talking about no-see-ums or sand fleas. We understand that there are all kinds of "bugs" on islands but we just dont want to go to an island that has a "bug problem".

For our honeymoon we would prefer AI but its not a must. Our budget is around 10 thousand give or take alittle. Some of the only real things we are looking for is no kids, and a beautiful beach. We dont mind no nightlife or shopping (but if there was some we would make use of it) We would also prefer either a room on the beach or a room with a plunge pool. Were only going for 7 - 9 days so we dont want to travel too far.
Thanks again

Take a look at PSV that is nearby. Complete privacy and you can request a cottage on the beach. Not many bugs comparitively speaking to other places we've been. We have FAR more bugs in South Texas!

Ditto ScubaMom. I would think the more breeze you have the better chance of fewer bugs/mosquitos, too.

I miss PSV.

Hi pocketsx,
My wife and i have been to Palm Island 3 times and i can assure you that it has no more bugs than other caribbean islands. My wife had a couple of bites but she gets bit wherever we go in the caribbean.Myself totally bite free, but thats the norm for me(maybe its the alcohol in my blood).
So go for it.

While it may not have more bugs, I had so many bites in one night that I had to visit the French doctor that lived there. I usually get a few bites but I was completely covered -- all with OFF! on my body.

I don't know if it had to do with my chemistry or lots of bugs but I will tell you that they drive around during the day with a huge bug fogger -- had to quickly close our shutters or it would have fogged us in our room!

Gerry and I spent 9 days at Palm Island two years ago and thought it was one of our favorite Caribbean experiences. We did not have any bug problems whatsover. That being said, I have never been to PSV but have read on Tripadvisor that you DON'T go for the beaches so keep that in mind. . .

I'll have to read the post from TA for PSV. We loved the sandy beaches on PSV.

forgot to add that the beaches on Palm are better than PSV. Each has something to offer.

Where did you decide to go?
