Budget/Moderate AI with Best Food

Hi,
I am considering a last minute getaway with one son (the rest of the family is off to Speed Week) in August. Good food is really important to me, but we are on something of a budget. Are there any AI's that stress the quality, not the quantity of food? A good beach is nice too. Have been to Barbados and Bermuda, but we can go anywhere, including the Riviera Maya, that we can reach from IAD.

Any suggestions? I have been searching this forum for a while, but the combination of budget and good food doesn't jump out.

I will post on the Latin America board as well.

The Rex Grenadian in Grenada. It's 3 star, on a fabulous beach and is AI. We had an inexpensive holiday there and the food was mostly very good, it was all buffet and there is only 1 main restaurant (with no aircon) lunches can be served by the pool restaurant. In August it is not busy and guests are mainly Brits, not many guests from the US -maybe not upscale enough. It was a last minute getaway for us too since we had been to Hawaii earlier in that year. Trpadvisor has many reviews on it.

A friend of mine stayed at the Reef Club in Rivera Maya and really liked it. It's budget, but the food was good and the location was within walking distance to Playa Del Carmen.

Peace, Greenie

Some of the more higher end AI resorts will have the better food, but probably not in your budget. It would help to provide what your budget is.

Mexico is a good choice, but not for August due to hurricane season. We've been 3 times to that area in a Aug/Sept and will not chance it again. If you decide to, make sure you get full coverage/cancellation trip insurance for any reason. It costs more, but will be worth it.

Look for hotels that offer an AI plan or option instead of a AI resort. Those types of hotels don't cater to the masses and their food is sold for profit to the people who did not chose the AI option and outsiders. Therefore, the quality is usually much better.
