Bringing Food to St. John
Just wandering from reading some messages about bring food to St.John (i.e. frozen meat, seafood, etc). Did the airlines/ customs have a problem with this? Would you check your frozen food or carry it on? Any comments would be helpful! Thanks

You can do either....most who I know have checked the frozen items along with their luggage. Personally, though, I've never really understood wanting to cart food down there. Just about anything you could possibly want is readily available and while it may cost a bit more, it is not completely outrageous. I always hit the supermarket when I get on-island and stock up....I save that extra space in my luggage for another swimsuit.

Schultz is absolutely right. I would not bother carting around food. The main grocery store in Cruz Bay has ample choice of items, albeit a tad bit more expensive. But worth the extra money not having to carry stuff around. Also, what if your luggage gets lost and the items thaw out? Rethink bringing frozen food items. I really am not sure it is worth it in the long run.

I agree with the other responses taking frozen food is not a good idea. I did take some dry goods such as spaghetti and noodles. The thing you have to decide, is it worth lugging these items all the way from home when they can be purchased at a slightly higher price. One interesting thing I did not know about St. John is that there is no commercial fishing on the island. This means all sea food is flown in and is not cheap to buy.

i imagine some folks will be dismayed to see me posting here again. however- we always take a cooler of frozen stuff (checked luggage). alot of what we take is food we prepare beforehand. appetizeers, marinated meats to grill,also frozen juices for cocktails and lunch meats. food is pricey on island and trips to grocery use time but we def shop on island as well. customs and airlines could care less. some island restrict fruit and veggies. brit islands ask that you bring a list of each item in cooler.
