I've done a search that didn't help... not even sure where to post this!

I'll fly to/from Puerto Rico for a cruise to Caribbean. Will be buying rum on the islands to bring back home. Getting off the ship in San Juan, Puerto Rico, layover in Florida, back to California.

I can bring up to $800 in souvenirs, but only 1 liter of liquors. If I have another 1/2 liter over that limit, I will pay 3% tax, is this correct? If yes, where do I pay? In Florida? Or before that, in Puerto Rico?

You'll clear customs when you get off the ship in PR (not when you get back to Florida). That's where you will declare the purchases you made while out of the country. You should declare the liquor you purchased to the customs agent. Technically you can bring in 2 liters of liquor (not 1 liter) in your $800 exemption. If you bring in more it is subject to duty but in reality most times if you are brining in a reasonable amount for your own consumption the customs agent will give you a "pass". Just be sure you declare the liquor and you'll be fine.

Be knowledgable of the rums that are already available in your area. We brought back 3 bottles of rum that I could get at the local liquor store for the same price.

But the limits are different on rum produced in the USVI. Also, ive always declared my liquor but have never paid a duty. Not even once.

GardenDiva, you gave me an idea! Checked our local BevMo, some rums are available there, for around $20 a bottle (our son asked for dark or aged only) - so instead of worrying about going over the weight limit or breakage I can buy a few bottles, hide them till after vacation
