Breezes Varadero

We have just returned from spending two weeks at Breezes Varadero (Dec 16-30,2001) and were very disappointed. We had been at the resort at Christmas 1999 and it was outstanding. The food was good and well presented. The rooms, although plain, were well maintained and clean. This year however it was a different story. The food was at times unedable. The choice for the first week was chicken, pork and fish, at both lunch and dinner. They were always in some sort of sauce and all tasted the same. Christmas week there was a slight improvement but it blew hot and cold.

The rooms have become very 'tired'. The water pressure is non existant and the furnishings are showing their age.

The beach is still beautiful and one of the nicest I have been on. The beach bar is again open (it was not the first week) and so you can get lunch at the beach (hamburgers/chicken/ pizza) which is a lot better than going to the dining room.

The staff is very helpful and try hard to please.

To rate this resort 4 1/2 stars however is nonsense. It probably deserves 3 stars at most.

Remember, when looking at Caribbean Ratings to subtract 1-1.5 stars.
So Breezes is about 3-3.5 which is what you rated it.
The rating system is 1-6 (world wide system is 1-5 and only a few hotels worldwide rate a 5)ie Mandrian Oriental, Plaza Ateatne (sp_ in Paris) etc.

We have stayed in several all inclusive hotels in the Caribbean so I was basing my ratings on Caribbean standards. The tour books (Signature, Conquest, Sunquest etc) all rate Breezes as 4+. Compared to other properties that I have stayed in from the same books, Breezes does not deserve this rating.

My husband and I stayed at Paradisus Varadero late November. Our travel agent had raved about this resort. Interestingly, we also hated the food, although the hotel itself was quite nice...

The best hotel to stay at in Veradero is the Melia Veradero. Their all inclusive plan includes eating at 11 restaurants and has 8 bars. You can order anything including Lobster, steak etc. The food was never less than fabulous including champagne at breakfast. The rooms are fine not luxurious, it is an older resort but beautifully maintained. The pool is large the service is great. I would go back to this property in a minute. I hope this helps anyone looking for good food in Cuba.

We went to Breezes Varadero in the first week of August. We checked in very early in the morning around 2am because our flight was late, the lobby was beautiful, but, the desk clerk could not care less if we were there or not. There were 2 other couples checking in at that time. When we went to our room, it had not been cleaned yet, still dirty sheets on the bed! The bell hop was excellent, he called right away and had us in a new clean room in 5 minutes. After that our stay was wonderful, the staff was friendly and the beach was beautiful. But, i do agree about the food, it was bland and looked like the same food was served from lunch to dinner. Extremly bland and uneventful.

Has anyone been to this resort since December 2001? We stayed at Breezes in May 2000 and had an exceptional week. Last year we stayed at Breezes Costa Verde in May and had another great week. We are again considering Breezes in Varadero - but now I am not sure. Has anyone been recently and care to provide an update. How does this resort compare to Beaches? Thanks

The biggest complaint about all of Cuba is the food. The style of cooking is without spice. Most resorts do have a large selection, but they either just don't use spice, or may not be able to get it due to the embargo.
I personally found the food great, and we ate a several hotels, but it was the exact same everywhere. I liked the lack of spice, because, well I must admit, I am a boring cook myself!! But if you love spice and tons of flavour, Cuba is not the place for you.

We went to Breezes Varadero for two weeks on Sep 5th . There were four of us and we had paid for an upgrade to two Oceanview suites. On arrival one of the rooms had a deadful water leak and we had to settle for a room with a view over the air conditioning unit at the next door hotel for three days until they could move us to a better room . We were eventually given a room with a fabulous view. None of the rooms had efficient plumbing - we mastered the art of dancing in and out of the boiling hot/freezing cold shower .
The food was poor - although we did not starve it was very bland - undercooked meat and food offered at dinner was served up at lunch the next day However they made the most of what they had and if you like fish even better . Lobster and seafood served quite often. The Italian and Cuban restaurants were much better - and if you give the head waiter in the Italian a tip he will let you eat there more that your allotted twice!

Beach is fabulous - the people are great and overall we had a great holiday. Take some biscuits or similar - there is no where to get any foodstuffs in the hotel .

Although the hotel rooms are looking a bit tired the grounds are spectacular and very well maintained .

Overall I would give this a three star and I would reccommend it - the beach is great, the people are friendly, the amenities within the hotel are excellent - just a shame about the food and the plumbing.
