Posted a Bonaire Trip Report earlier. Can't help myself, have to also share this unique snorkeling experience while at the Plaza Resort in Bonaire:
Hubby and I were snorkeling and watching this school of hundreds of about 1 inch long silver fish (we think they were anchovies) staying in perfect formation and swimming fast around one "leg" of the pier at the Plaza Resort. Larger fish kept jumping up and eating them.
All of a sudden, this school left the pier, came over and started swimming fast and in formation round and around my husband. It was awesome. The larger fish hovered nearby but would not "attack" the small ones - my hubby was their protector. Then all of a sudden they came over and started circling around me. I'd put my hand down into them and they would separate like mercury.
We have been snorkeling for 16 years, have never had this experience and probably never will again.
OK, we are probably lucky a shark or something didn't eat us (well, the water is pretty shallow there and I don't think there are sharks close in the area so guess a shark is an exaggeration) but it was the most awesome snorkel experience I have ever had. Just had to share!
PS. If they were not anchovies, any guess on what they may have been?

LvSun, We call them silver slides. I don't know if that is right. We saw millions and millions at Francis Bay on St. John in November.
It is an experience isn't it. I've had that happen to me a couple of times on different islands with larger schools of fish. I remember just laughing with absolute delight. Those moments, and others, are what makes snorkeling spiritual for me. We are lucky souls when that happens. Owa
