I have been researching a good location for us to accomodate a family trip that includes both teenagers and young adults that like to both lay around on a beach and do some snorkeling. Is the area of Bolongo Beach a good area that has both sandy beach and maybe some areas to explore. I'm finding very little online about STT, so I'm a little hesitant.

I like Bolongo, but it's kind of funky. If you want something more upscale, keep looking, perhaps at the Marriotts, which are also on the south shore and offer a water taxi service into town, which Bolongo doesn't. Since the resort is in an out of the way location, it can feel a bit isolated.
The beach at Bolongo is a little pebbly, but it's nice and fairly large (certainly large enough for the guests). I don't think snorkeling there is great, but there are many choices for snorkeling excursions in the USVI and BVI that you can get any day, so I don't see that as a big stumbling block. The resort itself is fun, and I like it because it's still family-run, but the Marriott resorts have been recently refurbished and are on a nicer stretch of beach.

i think it's the best beach on st. thomas. has nice gradual sandy entrance to the water & hands down best off beach snorkeling on island. plenty of shade, plenty of sun, plenty of loungers.
has good restaurant & fun beach bar on site. you would need a car or taxi to get anywhere but same goes for bolongo.
all units are large with big decks, full kitchens, nice living rooms. you can save money and perhaps add to convience by going to the grocery for some breakfast, lunch & cocktail supplies.
