Better snorkeling - The Dominican Republic or Jamaica

We've narrowed it down to going to the Dominican Republican or Jamaica. We plan to do a lot of snorkeling. Which has the best snorkeling and are there particular areas that better snorkeling in each place?

Thanks for your help!

We have only been to Negril so can only say about snorkelling there and it was not very good. Neither was scuba. On the other hand, DR would not be a place I would go at all. I'm a bit surprised at the final choices considering you were asking for the best places in the Caribbean for snorkelling.

You will not find good snorkeling in either of those destinations. If you plan on doing a lot of snorkeling, you need to chose a better destination.

Neither island is known for great snorkeling or diving. I like Jamaica a LOT better than the DR just generally speaking.

I love Negril, but the snorkeling is not very good anymore. Have you thought about St. John or Grand Cayman?

Hi. We love to snorkel and have traveled to the "hot" snorkel spots in the Caribbean. We've been to Grand Cayman, Bonaire, and St. John. I've never been to the Dominican Republic but have been to Jamaica 3 times. We snorkeled a few times at Doctors Cave beach in Montego Bay. We were so surprised to find the snorkeling there really good! I find with snorkeling that conditions are always changing. Some days, months, years the snorkeling is excellent at a certain spot and at other times water vis just isn't the same, the fish have moved onto other places, etc. So many people love St. John for the snorkeling. When we were there the snorkeling was just eh. Meanwhile, the first time we visited Doctors Cave beach in Jamaica we were shocked to see some great stuff. (the next visit a year later the snorkeling was okay, not great) No one would ever say Jamaica is a snorkeling destination but in our vacation history we had better snorkeling in Jamaica than St. John!

I agree with others, you have two places where the snorkeling just isn't the main attraction.

If you want great snorkeling....Grand Cayman, St John, Akumal, Roatan, Bonaire, Cozumel would all be good choices.

Unfortunately the two you have picked are not going to compare.
