Best time of year to visit St. John
What is the best time of year aside from peak season (Jan-March) to visit St. John?
I heard there is a rainy season from April through the summer and then there is hurricane season too. Any advice? Thanks!

April to July before hurricane season is not very wet, the water has warmed up for good snorkeling, and the water is fairly calm for snorkeling. November to mid-December (before high season prices) is also very good. Sometimes the snorkeling won't be the best because of the occasional north swells from the early winter storms to the north.

I agree in general with xkenx. We usually go in January/February and the weather is cooler and the water is about 75 degrees too, which to me is still fine for swimming/snorkeling. Some folks wear those swim shirts. We've also been to St. John twice during July, twice during April/May, and once in early December. The weather was fortunately pretty darn good each time. If there is a storm, it's usually over in a couple of hours. It's just a small island, and storms move over it pretty quickly. April is actually my favorite because it hasn't gotten quite that hot yet.

You should know that April isn't necessarily off season. Many places do not go into off season until after the 30th of April or until after Easter. Some places have shoulder season, usually April and May.

Patchpeach: Beginning of October is still in hurricane season but I have to say I'd go to St. John any chance I get. If you buy trip insurance then you don't have to worry about it too much. One of the great advantages of the Virgin Islands is ease of going from one island to another. You might want to try at least one other island just to enjoy and compare the differences. With 10 days, you could try at least a night or 2 on another island. One advantage of going in early October is that it is the off-season so many places will be lower in prices. As for the Westin, I enjoy it very much. It is packed with amenities, beautiful grounds and very good if somewhat expensive food choices. The beach is only okay, but on St. John there are so many other great beaches to enjoy. We have spent 3 weeks at a stretch on St. John and we never run out of things to do or see, but that's just us.
