Best snorkeling in Grand Cayman????
We are looking to find the best snorkeling spot while our cruise ship drops us off in Georgetown. One option in our shore excurshion book lists Spanish Bay Reef as being good.
We've been disappointed with snorkeling in St. Martin, St. John, but found the best so far to be in Cozumel and Hawaii. Any tips would be appreciated

We've stayed on Grand Cayman the past two years for a total of 19 days so I'm pretty familar with the snorkeling. If you haven't done a trip to Sting Ray City, I recommend doing that with a SMALL boat that also includes 2 snorkeling stops. I would avoid the cruise ship charters, they look very crowded. We've done two snorkeling trips with small outfits and were thrilled with both. If you don't want to snorkel with a guide/boat, you can take a taxi to Cemetary Reef and go right off the beach. It's gorgeous and full of fish. Grand Cayman is completely different than St. John - at least the cruise ship snorkeling we did there. Hope this helps.

We have also been to GC twice, and have snorkeled extensively throughout the island. There are a lot of choices, and everyone has their favorites. I agree with the previous post, if you haven't swam with the stingrays at Stingray Sandbar, it's an amazing experience. Plus, you'll also stop at 2 other excellent snorkel spots. Cemetary reef also suggested above is a nice choice, but you'll need to take a taxi about 6 miles or so north of town where you dock.

There are two locations very close to where you dock inb town that are excellent. Our personal favorite is Eden Rock, which is just south of town at Edend Rock Dive center, which has a ladder into the water. The location has a reef that is 70+ feet deep in some areas. and only 10 in others. It has huge schools of fish, and many caverns & crevices below that hold all kinds of life. You're likely to encounter large Tarpon here, (5-6 feet). I highly recommend this spot. 2nd choice is a wreck off of Rackhams pub in town. There is also a ladder here, and the wreck is a short swim out. Hope this helps.

We stopped here on a cruise in Feb, and had booked a snorkel/stingray city tour off the web with Captain Marvin's. The boat was nice, maybe 15 people on board, good gear, good crew. They have a videographer on board that will film your day and then you can buy the video and it is sent to your home (yes, it did arrive in about a week).
Check them out. You will have a great time!

Gerrie,
I had to smile when I saw your post. Even though Grand Cayman is pretty technologically advanced, if you ever see either of these operations, you would understand a web site is not in the picture. Much too informal and laid back for that, I think.

The following are 2 other snorkel centers you can try as well as Spanish Bay Reef Resort (which is good) [hubby is the diver/snorkeler]:
- Red Sail Sports
- Captn. Crosby's Watersports

Sting Ray City might be the best for you, since you folks are with the cruise.

Can't understand why you were disappointed in St. John; he loved Trunk Bay, Cinnamon Bay, and....can't think of the 2 others there. Cozumel and BVI's are great - he really enjoyed snorkeling Norman Cave and The Indians (to name a few) in the BVI's.

Have fun - hope this helps.

Actually, both Dexter's and Marvin's have web sites. Just search for them on google.com

I think Dexter's is under Fantasea. I used to have them both bookmarked, but I deleted them after our trip. I booked our trip with Dexter online.

If you can't find them, repost, and I'll see what I can do to find them for you.

lisa
