Bermuda visit in Sept. - 1st time

Will be spending 3 days off a cruise ship in mid Sept. for our first visit to Bermuda. Plan to self guide and explore on our own. I've heard the 3 day bus/ferry pass is the way to go. Looking for suggestion for lunches in local eateries, away from the tourists. Where do the locals go? Would you recommend renting a 2 person Moped for travel on one day? Possible itinerarys would be welcome. Also, I've read that there is a Wednesday street fair in Hamilton. Is that recommended, what are the hours for that?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

What a great time to visit beautiful Bermuda.
1. Bus pass: Absolutely recommended because taxis are very expensive. The better value might be to buy a token booklet rather than three day pass. Depends on how much you are actually going to use public transportation. When you go to buy your pass in Bermuda talk to the transportation officer who sells them.
2. Renting a moped is huge fun and the best way to see all the little nooks and crannies BUT, and it is a big but, riding them is very dangerous. Bermuda's roads are narrow with no shoulder, traffic moves in the opposite direction from home and the locals drive very fast and often quite recklessly. Add to that first time riders and too much alcohol and it can be a disaster. Don't do it unless you feel really confident of your skills. I recommend Elbow Beach cycles or Oleander.
3. Bermuda is a pretty small place and you will find locals and tourists use the same restaurants. For a reasonably priced meal try The Lemon Tree, The HogPenny Pub, Bouchee, Art Mels Spicy.
4. I have not been to the fair so cannot recommend it.
5. Don't worry too much about an itinerary. Bermuda's beaches are gorgeous and you just might find yourself sitting on one all day. The Railway Trail is a fun place to walk. I like to scuba or snorkel, try Church Bay for that. The forts are interesting and worth a stop. Bermuda's Underwater Exploration Museum is quite well done. And the Botanical Gardens should be gorgeous.
Have a wonderful time. Bermuda is another world.

Hi jackz,

>

You must be thinking of Harbour Nights which run May - September.
features:
1) On-street celebrations from 7 to 10 p.m.
2) Shops are generally open until 9:00 p.m.
3) You get to see Bermuda's local Arts and Crafts
4) Live Music and Entertainment
5) Food Court
6) Lots of activities for Children in the Children's Court, including fun castles in all sizes, the ever-popular train, face painting, tattoos and hair braiding.
7) You can see the Bermuda Regiment band, which marches down Front Street in full regimental apparel with pipes and drums.

Update May 2014: Harbor Nights is scheduled from May 7 to September 3, 2014, on every Wednesday from 7pm to 10pm. This is the 22nd anniversary of the event.
Additional ferries will leave Hamilton ferry terminal for dockyard on Wednesdays at 9:30pm, 10pm and 10:30pm.

I would also plan to stop at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse - the highest point in Bermuda and very nice views.
In Somerset, you will pass over the smallest drawbridge in the world - always worth a photo stop.
While in this area, stop by Robinson's Marina and rent a kayak for a few hours. Great way to see the sights.

Thank-you both for your input and advice. We are looking forward to our visit. I'm torn on the Moped, would love the adventure part (I once had a motorcycle) but a little concerned about the risk.

Consider renting from Elbow Beach Cycles. They have an off road training area where you can get the feel of the bike without much traffic. Personally I have opted to walk or take transport after years of riding. Too many risks to be worth it.
Have fun, Bermuda is another world.

Follow cmcfong's advice and try the scooter. If you do not feel comfortable, then don't rent it. With 3 days you can certainly see a lot of the island via bus & ferry.

We have our 21st visit coming up in October and we always get a double-scooter....I seat on the back with my eyes closed some of the time! We only drive it during the day, using the ferry and taxis in the evening.
