Bequia - I want to know everything !!
We are traveling to Bequia in July & staying in Moonhole. I am guessing we'll need some form of transportation. Is the island easily doable on a bike or scooter ? Or, is a car recommended ? Also, favorite things to do, places to eat ? Are there any legit markets ? Do boats come in on certain days w/fresh friut & veggies ? If so, what days? Have already looked on here & TA - not tons of info out there, am looking for Fodorites expertise. If we have no resident experts, I'll see what info I glean while I am there - not doing Montserrat this trip ! Thanks, SA

Mac's Pizza is a must. I think the months that end in "R" they have lobster pizza, but I've heard anytime of year, Mac's is a must do.
I went to Moonhole in the early 90's....an awesome place. I have a National Geographic hardcover book from the 1960's called Isles of the Caribbees...it features Moonhole and the couple that built it...in the 90's when I visited, I met his son (who looked just like the picture from when the book was printed - in the 60's) How cool is that! Have a great time!

Hi, I am a Bequian and I live on the island. I'm very involved in the tourism industry here so pretty sure I can help you. Moonhole is at the west end of Bequia, very quiet, peaceful and remote, while all the shops, restaurants etc are at the opposite end so I strongly recommend a rental car. There are several people who rent vehicles. Sunrise Rentals has mini mokes and jeeps 784-593-3631 and is located at Paget Farm, the nearest village to Moon Hole. There are well stocked shops at Port Elizabeth, (the town) such as Doris Fresh Foods and Knights Supermarket, plus others. There is a vegetable market and several vendors along the main road at Port Elizabeth with fresh fruits and vegetables. If you take a look at the Bequia Tourism Association website www.bequiatourism.com you will find tons of info about Bequia, things to do, places to visit and even more car rentals. From the site you can also find the weekly published Bequia This Week which highlights all the events taking place week to week, including the restaurants and special features..ie menus, local performers and so on. Take a look and have a wonderful stay on Bequia. It is a very special place and everyone I know who visits comes again and again.

The places to see on Bequia is on one end and the shops, restaurants are on the other end so I would strongly recommend you to rent a car.
Among restaurants, Frenando's Hideaway, Fig Tree, Mac's Pizzeria and Coco's place are the best in Bequia. Try atleast one of them.

You might want to pick up a book called 'Island in the Clouds'. The story is based on Bequia and Moonhole features in it. Whilst it's a murder mystery, it does give you a great mental picture of the island and is part travelogue. Have a look; http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0074DU5A6 or http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/Islan...YUA/page1.html

Thanks to all as well as your offer Lucille. I have already explored the Bequia website but always welcome first hand experiences/knowledge as well.
Is it w/in a reasonable distance to bike or take a scooter from Moonhole to places we would like to see ? Or, is that too much ? Please keep in mind though we are both 'old' (approaching 49 & egad! 50 soon) we are also both very fit & active. I give credit to my young children for that...

BEQUIA :
1) Thursday night buffet at Frangipani Hotel features
a steel drum band at the outdoor bar that brings in a wonderful mix of locals and people from boats in the harbor
2) Challenger Taxi owner Curtis is a wonderful man :
honest , intelligent and resourceful
3)my two favorite spots for lunch time lobster :
L'Auberge & Coco's

hi, SA. My experience may be a bit outdated, but if you click on my screen name and then look for my trip reports, you can read about my experience in Bequia in 2006. You'll defintiely be isolated at Moonhole, but that place looks so interesting--I had hoped to tour it during my vacation, but the proprietor was due to give birth any day so there weren't any tours. We stayed in town and got by on the dollar buses, walking to Lower Bay, and taking the occasional taxi.
I agree with the suggestion of Mac's pizza. If the Green Boley is open, it was the most reasonably priced restaurant we experienced for rotis for lunch or dinner. Green Boley is on the Belmont Walkway.
Our favorite beach experience was at Industry Bay. We were the only people on it all afternoon, and there is plenty of natural shade from the palm groves. there's a tiny inn and restaurant there called Crescent Beach, but they're not open every day if there are no overnight guests in residence. Again, that might have changed in the last 6 years.
We stayed at Frangipani and it was a fun place for evening drinks--very lively with the sailing crowd. But I thought the dinners there, particularly their Thursday night buffet special, were pretty bad.
We shopped at an open air market in Port Elizabeth that might be one of the places that Lucille mentions. The produce was good.
Are you in transit in St. Vincent? If so, their botanical garden is worth spending a little time on that island to see. I also LOVED the tiny medical museum on St. Vincent, but it's not for the faint of heart.
We spent one full day on the Friendship Rose, too. And while I don't regret it, I didn't realize that it would end up being about 5.5 hours sailing and only 2 hours for lunch & snorkeling at the Tobago Cays. It was a great way to spend the day, but if you really love being IN the water as opposed to being ON it, it might not be the best fit for you.
Let me know if you have specific questions I can answer for you. One extra thing I would suggest: lots of bug spray for being at Moonhole. LIke our room at the Frangipani, Moonhole is open air without window screens. despite our elevation and constant breeze, mosquitos were a problem in town.
