Barbados- where to stay?

My husband and I are planning a first time trip to Barbados at the end of this month. I have been researching and trying to decide where to stay. It sounds like either St. James or Christ Church are the favorites. We are looking for a reasonably priced hotel. I have been looking on travelocity and the best prices are for Allamanda Beach Resort, Southern Palms Beach Club, Silver Rock, Divi Southwinds, Divi Heritage, Casuarina BEach Club, Amarillyis Beach Resort, Blue Horizon, Sand Acres, and Coconut Court. Please let me know what you know about any or all of these hotels. I want cheap but not gross. We also would like a hotel with a nice beach or within walking distance to several beaches. Please let me know what the beaches are like in the areas, as well. Thanks so much for your help!

Suggest you check out Coral Sands on Sandy Beach in Worthing Christ Church--www.coralsandsresort.com. All suites with kitchens and very nice. Ask for an end unit on the third floor or fourth floor for the best view. Beach is about a mile long and very nice. About a 15- 20 min walk to St Lawrence Gap to some very nice restaurants. Grocery store about a 10 min walk.

Kristy,

I already wrote you, but again, Coral Sands is a terrific resort. Low season it's usually $155/night.

Southern Palms is a larger resort, and within walking distance of the Gap. Might be a good back up choice. As I told you, St. James area is very expensive.

We just returned from a wonderful honeymoon at Bougainvillea, this is a beautiful resort, rooms are very big, great view no matter what room you are in!! Staff friendly, maid service great, everything was just wonderful.
My one big suggestion as far as food outside the resort goes is the local food is your best bet! We made the mistake of eating at several restaurants recomended by others on the web and were disappointed. We tried Pisces and Josefs, yes they are very nice and sitting by the water is beautiful but I would not waste my money more than one night. The food was very bland, but the truly local food is not to be missed. Oh and you do have to go to Oistens on Friday. If you go to the gap find ANN she has a BBQ stand ACCROSS from the Shop Inn not in front of but accross the street, her food is unbelievalble!! Yes, you may not get the ambiance of sitting at a table on the water but you save money and get MUCH better food!!!! . She is wonderful, be sure to tell her "Big Mon" and his wife recommended her!! She will know.....everyone on the Island call my husband "Big Mon" (he is a bodybuilder) it was so cute we could not walk 5 feet without hearing someoe call it out.

We returned from a week's stay on Wed., the 30th of June. The weather was hot for the whole time.(80's) It did rain 3 afternoons, 2 for a brief time and the other day it rained a bit longer when we were snorkling, but no all day affair. Take a travel umbrella or sign one out from your front desk. Everthing dries up quickly when it stops. Only problem is it gets muggy-er after the showers.

Forgot-When we asked about rain our guide said the rain clouds usually blow over quickly so that the forcast says rain but it usually doesn't get there or isn't bad.

Thanks for the response! That's good to know. I don't mean to be obsessed with weather as you never have a guarantee... We just would love sunshine on our only two weeks away south this year. One good example of never having a guarantee was when we were in Cuba in March one year. Should have been great weather, but we had 3 days of rain in a week and were rained out completely two days. Another day we had a wicked sandstorm on the beach and couldn't be on it. So, you never can tell!

We just got back from Barbados where we stayed at the Amaryllis Beach Resort. The place has just been done over and is very nice. We reserved an oceanfront studio and were upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite. The view from our balcony was gorgeous!

The pool areas and hotel itself is very pretty and immaculate. The service in the restaurants seemed a bit slow but maybe just because we are used to a more hectic pace.

The hotel is on a beautiful beach although a bit small.

Overall, the place had just enough activity for us without being overwhelming. I would definitely stay there again.

We just got back on July 25 -- we were there for 2 weeks and experienced a few days with occasional showers (the longest being about 10 minutes) -- then it would clear and be sunny again. It did not hinder us at all. I usually carry a small pocket-size umbrella just to be safe, but overall it was perfect weather.
