bahamas over thanksgiving

Hi All, my family would like to take a vaca over TG break. we are on the east coast so getting to the bahamas is fairly easy. my husband made the mistake of mentioning the atlantis resort to our daughter, and she was thrilled! however, I feel like it would be like disney in the bahamas. maybe I am wrong. i would rather go somewhere where we get a taste of the local culture. we basically are looking for a place that has great snorkeling, fishing, and maybe golf. a place where we can try the local food, and not go broke. our kids are 18 & 21, so they do need some activities. i have heard the snorkeling at atlantis is not that great, and that is an activity we really enjoy. any suggestions other than atlantis? or for those of you who have been to atlantis, would it fit the bill? If we went there I would stay at the comfort suites, not the atlantis resort. thank you!

Are you looking only at Nassau/Paradise Island where Atlantis is located or are you considering one of the other islands in the chain - there are more than 800 islands/cays in the Bahamas?

How much time do you have for your trip?

Do you have an actual budget for accommodations/food/activities otherwise we are only guessing on how much you can spend and "not go broke"????

Besides snorkeling, golf and fishing what other activities does your family enjoy?

FYI - there's not a great deal of good to very good 'off beach" snorkeling on Nassau - the best snorkeling is accessible only by boat - thee are several tour operators that do daily snorkel trips so factor that into your budget.

We will have 3 full days there. I know there are lots of islands and cays, but my hubby is focused on having a place where there is a ton of stuff for the kids to do. budget with air and hotel, ballpark $4500.00- $5000. we have camped quite a bit in the past, so we are used to just chilling with downtime. just didn;t know if there was a smaller resort that would offer the same types of activities.

Most people with your budget and looking for a resort with access to lots of activities stay at Comfort Suites but I gather from your original post you already know that.
