Hello All,
Just got back yesterday from a one-week honeymoon at the Nisbet Plantation on Nevis. We were married on St. Thomas at the Federick Lutheran church (my wife is from STT) and had a wonderful reception at the Old Stone Farmhouse. We spent the night at the Ritz Carlton and flew the next day to St. Kitts (stayed at the Ocean Terrace Inn) and took the ferry to Nevis the next day. I would be happy to answer any questions about the places we went.
I'll say a few words about Nevis and Nisbet, since that's the place where we where the longest. Nisbet had the kind of friendly, wonderful service that can be hard to find. We were on the Romance Package, which included two days of rental car, massages for each of us, breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner each night, a snorkel trip to St. Kitts, and a gourmet picnic lunch.
Plusses: the rooms were simple but elegantly furnished; the staff were amazingly friendly and helpful (the resort was less than half full while were there); the five-course dinner each night was superb and there was a full breakfast each morning; the island is scenic and easy to get around; there were some nice beaches on the island (Pinney's Beach and Oalie Beach). The Romance package is affordable. We never met an unfriendly person on the island (can't say that about other parts of the Carib. We liked the Golden Rock rainforest trail (saw the vervet monkeys), the botanical gardens, the other plantation inns, Pinney's Beach and Sunshine's, Oalie Beach.
Minuses: the Nisbet beach is not that great by Caribbean standards. It was OK the first few days, and then it got pretty windy. Snorkelling there is also just OK (but much better on St. Kitts). We went to other beaches while were there with the rental car, and since we spend a lot of time on the USVI, we can see that beautiful turquoise water elsewhere -- you don't really find it on Nevis. Nisbet is also by the Newcastle Airport, so you will notice about six-eight flights/day overhead. Charlestown is not impressive, no shopping to speak of.

The Four Seasons is also lovely, if more expensive and slightly more generic in feel. We didn't see the rooms, but the grounds and the pool and beach area were beautifully-maintained and the staff with whom we interacted were extremely nice and professional.

Jim. I am wondering if you can help me out. My boyfriend and I want to get married in the Caribbean. Do you think Nevis (we would be married at the Four seasons) is romantic? My boyfriend likes the lush scene with the mountains. I want a beautiful beach. Needless to say the beaches on nevis are not bright blue as other islands. I'm trying to find info so we can make a decision. If there is any insight you can give to this area of the island I would greatly appreciate your ideas. Thank you.
Hey there Jim. Congratulations on your wedding but was dissapointed after reading your message. We just booked a vacation for Nevis & St. Kitts (time spent on both islands)...I was dreaming a crystal clear, blue waters on some of the beaches on Nevis...is this not the case? How about St. Kitts...are crystal, blue waters there? Thanks so much.
Have been to Nevis (Nisbet) in 2000. Everything Jim says is basically accurate, in my opinion. The service at Nisbet was wonderful, and we loved the five-course dinner. The beach is indeed nice but very windy. If beautiful beaches and crystal clear water is what you want, you should perhaps consider Anguilla. That's where we went this year. What struck me was how deserted everything was. We had the beach (Mead's Bay) almost to ourselves! And there are many other beautiful beaches to choose from.

The water is frequently clear on both islands, but the snorkeling is probably a little better on St. Kitts. I would rate it as good to very good depending on conditions. There can be great snorkeling, but if the wind is blowing strongly or there is a disturbance out at sea, you won't have as good visibility. If you think you might be interested in snorkeling, I would highly recommend taking your gear with you. You'll have a great time paddling about. Popular spots are S. Friars,in front of Timothy Beach Resort, and Turtle Beach.
Snorkeling is best at South Friar's Bay, second best at Timothy Beach Resort and third at Turtle Beach. You can see such an enormous array of fish species, you will be amazed. From squid changing color in front of you at SFB to barracuda at TBR to sea turtles at North Friar's Bay, to the coral at TBeacg, you will enjoy the snorkeling.
And I agree wholeheartedly about bringing your own gear; we do every year. Nothing like having your own gear on your mouth and feet, knowing it has never touched anyone elses body.
The Four Seasons on Nevis is outrageously expensive and not worth the price ($600.00 a night is the least expensive), I have heard from many normal everyday people - unless you are rich that is. The rich indulge at FS. Best place to stay on Nevis is the Hurricane Cove Bungalows and on St. Kitts is Timothy Beach Resort. The plantation inns on SK are also gorgeous with phenominal gardens and service, but are also very expensive.
Enjoy your vacation on both islands; you will not be disappointed.

Sorry if I sounded discouraging about the beaches on Nevis. I think everything's relative -- as others have said, there are some lovely beaches on those two islands and good snorkelling. It's just not quite as nice as you get on other islands -- but on the other hand, these two islands have so much else to offer, and are less touristy. If you send me an e-mail, I would be happy to send a couple of pictures.
