Aruba, should we visit?
Oh yes! Definitely go to Aruba. We've been going there
now for 4 years and loved it so much we bought a time share at Playa Linda. We don't dive, but we like to snorkle. Theres plenty of that to do there. Yes, it is definitely, tourist friendly. they don't rip you off on anything!! La Cabana is nice; we went there to look around. It is very big. The beach is also big and the waves there are rough. The food is good, weather is great, sunny and the people are friendly. What more could you ask for? The Hyatt is a great place to stay also. Good luck. Write back. ejl416.

I think this is third Aruba response, today! Aruba is very tourist friendly and a great place to visit. If you are going and planning on those items you've mentioned, you can't go wrong. I suggest the Americana (right next door to Playa Linda in the other message) since I've stayed there twice. Keep in mind that Aruba is dry and not lush with vegetation. The beaches are like sugar. It's not any more expensive than any other island. Good luck!

love aruba. have gone last 12 years in oct.
very seldom rains for more than 15 to 60 minutes.
have never had a 'rained-out' vacation. best beach
is holiday inn, on palm beach, the 'high rise' hotel
area. hi is also best value, assuming you don't
mind a hotel that's been updated but is one of
oldest on island, and basically looks it. comparing
prices, you can get hi for considerably less than
the newer hotels and somewhat less than most of the
others. plenty of shopping in hotels, but mostly
in town. not much in way of 'sites,' you can 'do'
the island in about 4 hours - it's only 7 by 20.
has about 10 to 15 casinos, including a sports/race
book at the hi, and live poker games. definitely
'tourist friendly,' at least at a greater degree
than we've seen on any other island we've been to.
la cabana is not a bad value, but is not DIRECTLY
on the beach - you have to cross a road to get to
it. it does have the largest casino next door to
it. would not take 'all inclusive' unless you
absolutely abhor planning dinners, getting into a
cab for a short, inexpensive ride. there are a host
of restaurants, most of which are very reasonable.
they range from hamburger places like tgif's to
tony roma's to very nice restaurants in the hotels.
if you stay on palm beach, all the hotels are in
easy walking distance of each other, with a safe,
paved beach walk to boot, and many restaurants in
this area are also easily accessable, many by a 15
or so minute walk.
i do not work for or have any financial stake in
the hi or any other part of aruba. it just sounds
that way. we simply love the place and the variety
of everything it seems to offer (except sightseeing
- we have a friend going there for 15 years and has
never 'seen' the island).

Well I guess that I am in the minority, but I did not like Aruba. Beside the fact that it is extermely arid I found people unfriendly. I went to every managers cocktail party, saw every rock and cactus, went to see every show at all of the hotels and found it lacking and not worth the money. I will admit that the filter in the pool at my hotel was broken, the air conditioner in my room leaked and the carpet was wet, plus after walking 50 yardes into the ocean the water was still only up to my knees. Perhaps that is why I felt that I was spending 10 days in hell.

My wife and I spent a week in Aruba last September and had a great time. Next to Cayman, it was perhaps the safest feeling island we have been to. We rented a car and drove EVERYWHERE without a worry in the world. Even though the island has very few road signs off the main roads, you never really feel lost. The locals are very friendly, with a very diverse ethnic mix. We stayed at the La Cabana All-Suites. The prices were great and, although the hotel itself is not as "spectacular" as say the Hyatt (which gorgeous), the room are probably twice as big, each having a full kitchen, kitchen table, family room, and separate bedroom (fairly new and modern). The hotel has numerous pools, some with waterslides and a very nice beach. The snorkeling around the island is great and the island is beautiful and very different than your tipical Caribbean island - it's a very desert-like feel; sand dunes, cactus, boulders, rocky-mountains, lizards, etc. I would recommend eating at the Italian restaurant by the lighthouse during sunset. Great food and a spectacular sunset. Best thing about the island - almost NO rain. Everyday is sunny and hot (although there is a nice trade wind breeze to cool you off. Have Fun!
