We've stayed at this complex of 3 sister hotels (Melia las Americas, Melia Varadero, Sol Palmeras) 3 times over the past 10 years. Rooms are the same as at any Melia property, well appointed, comfortable and generally no unfortunate surprises. The property is spread out, with lovely gardens and very well maintained. The beach in front of Americas and Palmeras is rather private .. a rocky coral outcropping right in front of the Melia, separates it from the long stretch of beach that heads into Varadero proper. The golf course was recently redesigned and we haven't played the new one .. but it looks wonderful .. the views are spectacular. As to meal plan, we took breakfast/dinner only as we thought it the best alternative, then ate lunches and had drinks at the other hotel restaurants/bars on the property. I recommend the lobster at the beach restaurant at Palmeras if still available. (They'll tell you in advance which days it is delivered fresh.)There weren't private restaurants close by when we were there.. with the exception of the Dupont Mansion and a couple of snack type restaurants in a small shopping mall on the property. I believe with a meal plan you still have signing privileges at the other hotels. Perhaps with the expansion of other Melia properties in Varadero this may even have been extended. This site gives you some pretty good pics of the course .. the hotel you see is the las Americas.
