Some locals are very friendly and helpful, some are not. Same as any other place. Helpful if you understand some French.

When I want to look at amateur photos of an island, I usually go to www.webshots.com
Type in Guadeloupe in the search box and the first page that pops up has a bunch of photos. Click on whichever one interests you and it's usually someone's album. Click on "full album" on top right side and then on "view as a slideshow".

Agree with Odin that it is very helpful to speak some French or try to.
Please keep in mind that it has been several years since I have been to Guadeloupe. Having said that....it is one of our favorite islands. It is absolutely beautiful! I will whole-heartedly agree that it is a definite plus to speak French. (Take that from someone who took 5 yrs. of Spanish!)The food was excellent and most of the waitstaff was friendly. The locals, from what we encountered, would be friendly once you keep that smile on your face and be as nice as you can be.
A short story about a tour that we took: We booked one (don't remember the company) that took us to the volcano, through the countryside, into the rainforest (beautiful and nice hike to 3 natural waterfalls), lunch and to see the bananas on the roadside along with a statue of Christopher Columbus. Great day. Here's the trick...The tour guide was from there and delivered the information in French and then in English, as we were the only Americans on the tour. That was fine. The other tourists were definitely from France and acted like we weren't there until, a big until, they had several shots of local liquor at lunch, then we all got along famously!
Hope I didn't offend anyone reading this about the tour. We do have several friends here that were born and raised in France and we just love 'em.
